Abstract

This article focuses on three independent film festivals held in three different countries in Asia. They are (1) Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) in Jeonju, South Korea, (2) Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival in Manila, The Philippines, and (3) Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Multiple case studies is adopted to analyze the way in which these three independent film festivals are being organized, including the “messages” being circulated for their global audiences. The findings are analyzed based on the conceptual framework that consists of three relevant concepts: film as cultural product, independent film festival, and cultural discourse. The conclusion shows that the three analyzed film festivals offer an alternative way in film distribution, then demonstrate unconventional way of festival organizing, and strengthening the power of community and its networks as the basis for the development of their festivals.

Abstract

In 2012, Indonesian Corruption Eradication Comission (KPK) investigate further to Nazaruddin statement about Anas Urbaningrum’s corruption assessment on the sport center case. The frame analysis is used to look how Jawa Pos and Kompas Daily cover Anas Urbaningrum corruption assessment. This study concerns on Jawa Pos and Kompas Daily Januari editions 2012 about this news. It find that Jawa Pos Daily presents the Anas Urbaningrum’s news with resolute. While Kompas Daily presents that news with irresolute.

Abstract

Opera Van Java (OVJ) is a comedy program in an Indonesian television program, Trans 7. The idea of the show is a modernized human puppet show. The actors in the OVJ are given instruction to improvise themselves without memorizing the script, led by a Puppet Master (Dalang). This article will discuss the reception of the students of non Javanese ethnic towards OVJ. This is involved in the subject environment in order to know how they respond and perceive toward OVJ. The result is that most of the audiences from non Javanese ethnic like the OVJ show because of the unique stories and the funny actors that are presenting the show. Besides, the concept of the show that brings the Javanese theme allows the non Javanese ethnic audiences understand about Javanese culture.

Abstract

Korean Wave (music, movie, and drama), recently, accept a lot of attention from Indonesian teenagers. Thanks to the power of mass media, Korean music, or we called it KPop, beginning to spread it virus throughout the world by the emerging of Fandom. Super Junior as one of the pioneer of Korean boy band become the group that has the largest fan club in the world named ELF. This research examines the private media consumption behavior by ELF Jogja and the interaction between its members in organic and virtual community. Ethnographic became the main method by using participant observation, indepth interview, and focus group discussion with snow ball technique. The finding are (1) the private media consumption behavior of fans showed that the fans had "hyperconsumerist" sensibility and (2) when fans already jump to virtual communities, they will have different communication pattern like they ever had in organic community before.

Dalam pengantar buku ini, Sirikit Syah menuliskan bahwa buku ini merupakan nostalgia dari penulis yang ingin mengisahkan pengalaman dan keterlibatannya di detik.com. Abstract

Nowadays, the position of men and women has no difference. Men and women are treated equally as a commodity. The phenomenon of hegemonic masculinity have been well understood, despite the fact that media especially magazine, is a medium for the contest between masculinity and femininity. This study focuses on how masculinity of man is represented in Cosmopolitan Indonesia Magazine (August, September, October and December 2011 editions).

Abstract

Pandji Poestaka is a newspaper founded by the Netherland Indies colonial government, that is Commisie voor de Volkslectuur (Commission of the People Reading), or better known as Balai Poestaka. This study attempts to examine how the representation of natives in the colonial period in Pandji Poestaka ads 1940-1941. Using semiotics, this study shows that Pandji Poestaka ads has presented natives representation in the dichotomous class stratification. The native aristocracy (priyayi) and the underprivileged (wong cilik). Priyayi look represented the image of modernity: educated, wealthy, and civilized. Meanwhile, wong cilik has been overwritten by inferior image representation: traditional, blue-collar workers, and lazy. These representations, seen as part of the colonial strategy to maintain its position in the Netherland Indies. By representing social class among the natives, colonialism tried to keep the gap class. Colonialism also took advantage of the mass media (Pandji Poestaka) as an ideological state apparatus to continue, maintain power, and institutionalize the ideology of colonial rule.
