Abstract

This study aims to portray how students reflect their learning process in a creative writing course through their poems. Forty-seven students of an English Literature Department in a private university in Semarang participated in this study. The course mainly covered the short story and poetry writing. Poetry writing was started in the second half of the semester. In this study, the students were required to write a learning reflection to look back at the process they had been through. Employing Hanauer’s meaningful literacy concept (2012), the researchers analyzed how students reflected their learning process in their poems. It is argued that language learning should enable students to use language in a way that is more meaningful and relevant to their personal experiences. In terms of reflection, it is believed that by deliberately looking back at their learning process students can objectively evaluate, understand and make sense of their journey. This study found four major themes in the students’ reflective poems namely altered perspective, students’ struggle, increased self-assurance, and students’ future expectations. In conclusion, language learning should embrace meaningful literacy in which students should be allowed to deliver their personal and meaningful expressions, in this case by writing poetry.

Abstract

Metadiscourse denotes the writer’s use of language to enhance interaction with the reader. This article investigates the use of language to persuade readers and represent the company positively. The study examines the use of Metadiscourse resources in CEO letters of financial service companies listed in the Nairobi Securities Exchange. A total of 36 companies were sampled to represent companies that offer insurance, investment and banking services. The study utilized text analysis software (AntConc 3.5.7) to determine the quantitative outline of the Metadiscourse devices. This was followed-up with a qualitative analysis of the context in which the devices were applied, for further interpretation of the findings. All devices in the metadiscourse model were found in the text with a notably high incidence of self-mentions and transitions. This was attributed to the need to create reader-participation as well as to ease reader navigation through the text.  The findings are expected to further explain the role of Metadiscourse in financial disclosure by elaborating on its rhetorical nature. Results also highlight the importance of Metadiscourse features in the interpretation of content and attainment of diverse professional goals. Keywords: Interactional Metadiscourse, Interactive Metadiscourse, Genre, CEO Letter, Rhetoric

Abstract

Writing academic papers is challenging for students majoring non-English programs in higher education. This is because they must both understand academic writing conventions and English writing rules at the same time. This case study explores further perceptions of university students of Business and Administration regarding their academic writing skill. 20 students were selected by purposive sampling technique and were administered an online questionnaire to collect the data. Afterwards, three volunteer students joined in-depth interview to find out more information from the online questionnaire. The data were then analyzed by two techniques including frequency count for the quantitative data and qualitative analysis by employing thematic analysis for the qualitative data. The results discovered that students' perceptions of their academic ESP written competence in Business English were positive. Students are aware of both their own and the ESP writing requirements. However, these positive attitudes have not yet been fulfilled with appropriate writing lessons. Therefore, it is important for further research to conduct a study regarding the ESP writing lesson that works best for the students.
