Abstract

This study tries to discuss the economic interests of the Philippines towards China through the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. In reviewing this research, the researcher uses two concepts, namely: first, Donald E. Nuechterlein's concept of national interest, which explains that interests are a complex need of a country in relation to other countries that are outside its external environment. Second, the concept of Foreign Direct Investment, which explains that foreign direct investment can be a bridge to advance the economic growth of a country from foreign investors in the long term. The results of this study indicate that economic interests are prioritized by the Philippines against China, especially through the Belt and Road Initiative framework. This is indicated by encouraging an increase in the value of export-import trade and direct investment, so that it can encourage the realization of infrastructure which is the Philippines' main goal. Not only that, by implementing the grand strategy pivot to China, BRI's cooperation also brings various beneficial benefits to the Philippine economy, both from tourism, human diversity, as well as improving the existence and status of the country.

Abstract

The history of maritime disputes between Turkey and Greece has been going on for 5 decades. The increasing complexity in resolving the maritime boundary issue between the two occurred when Turkey changed its foreign policy approach to become more assertive and pro-active in maintaining its EEZ/continental shelf claims.Turkey initiated maritime boundary delimitation agreement with Libya in 2019, which is considered to violate international law because it ignores Greece EEZ/continental shelf claim. Greece with the support of other regional actors responded negatively to the agreement. This has an impact on Turkey’s isolated position in the region and Turkey is assumed has turned into a revisionist state. Based on the explanation above, this research aim to identify the determinant of foreign policy that influence Turkey’s policy in initiating MoU on maritime boundary delimitation with Libya. This research used qualitative-descriptive approach by adopting the concept of determinant of foreign policy and bilateral agreement as analytical tool. The results of this research has found several determining factor that influence Turkish policy, namely :(1) Political Ideology of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan,(2) Coallition of AKP party – MHP party, (3) Turkey’s energy diversification strategy, (4) Greece’s geopolitical vision to become a regional energy hub

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Australia's policy strategies to address the issue of refugees and asylum seekers who are considered to be threatening their domestic security. The growing issue of transnational crime causes a bad perception of the arrival of refugees and asylum seekers. Australia considers the arrival of refugees and asylum seekers as a potential entry point for transnational criminals into their country. This research was analyzed qualitatively by using the concept of national strategy and national security. The discussion focuses on the form of Australia's leadership strategy which executes the closure of the UNHCR refugee transit post and asylum seekers in Indonesia. This policy is Australia's effort to reduce the number of arrivals of refugees and asylum seekers, both legal and illegal through the transit post. Based on the leadership strategy analysis, the authors identify that Australia's superior position is able to initiate the Bali Process with Indonesia, as one of the programs created to improve regional security, and specifically in terms of handling the security of refugees and asylum seekers. Furthermore, as a form of initial implementation of this cooperation, Australia also has an agenda to help improve Indonesia's capabilities in the security sector. But gradually, Australia issued an Anti-resettlement policy by refusing immigrants who came from Indonesian transit posts, as well as closing the legal access of immigrants from these posts. In this case, Australia is considered capable of carrying out its leadership strategy because it has succeeded in “dictating” Indonesia in an agreement regarding the handling of refugees and asylum seekers which is more favorable to Australia's national security
