Abstract

The writing attemps to explore the philosophical meaning of the theological messages of Islam on religious freedom. The article do not study the empirical facts of religious freedom practiced by muslims today, but it scrutinizes the theological messages as written in the Qur’an and as showed by the real examples of the God’s Messenger. Through understanding some Qur’anic verses, we will find that Islam strongly encourages the life of different religious people based on the value of freedom. Freedom intended to be a base of religious life is not freedom to do whatever someone wants, but freedom to respect and to protect one another among religious people who are different in religion and faith. This value of message of religious freedom was wonderfully performed in historical practices of the Prophet Muhammad puh. From the Islamic principles of religious freedom that can be underlined, the writing finally tries to elucidate its philosophical meaning. The messages of religious freedom in Islam contain the strong and deep philosophical meaning, because the establishment of religious freedom is based on the fundamental value of human freedom and on the freedom as the nature of life itself.

Abstract

After the end of Soeharto’s regime, in 52 districts produced 78 regulations (perda) influenced by sharia to purify Islam from secular institutions. Because of that, Islam in Indonesia now is criticized as having a tendency to be close to status quo, and resulting so many problems, such as being injustice and dehumanize. Islam as a prophetic religion, as a religion not only for faith to Allah, is also a religion that liberating people from violence and injustice, as Prophet Muhammad brought it. This academic writing , using the hermeneuticmethod fromPaul Ricoeur, analizes the situation, by proposing three ways outthrough the theory of critical ideology, and the deconstruction, and offering to accept plurality, to overcome the problems of complicated situation. Propethic religion might be the proper solution for the problems of Islam in Indonesia than priestly/institutional religion, in order to acheive the better Indonesian society, by practising tolerance, openess in mind, egaliter and democatic.

Abstract

The Republic of Indonesia does not follow the pure concept of nation state as the national ideology of Pancasila recognizes the role of religion in the national political system. Based on this conception, the government has facilitated the establishment of the ministry of religious affairs which often breaks the principle of religion freedom. In the case of Islamic sect of Ahmadiyah, MUI, established under the auspice of the ministry of religions, has accused the Islamic sect of Ahmadiyah of having done the act of blasphemy. Actually, this will not become a problem if the state consistently applies the separations of power between public and private affairs. In this regard, religious communities take in a role of civil society which would provide checks and balances to the government in the pursuance of democracy. In line with this, the ministry of religious affairs, by means of MUI, should not judge people based on their beliefs. Al-Qur’an also recognizes the existence of different religions as well as some sects within a certain religion. Moreover, it is useful to implement Richard Niebuhr’s theory of denomination. Last but not least, MUI should act following the concept of nation state in order to moderate power which tends to corrupt.

Abstract

The discourse of religious harmony and freedom is still a current study and much studied through various approaches, including in the perspective of history, sociology, and culture. In Indonesia, normatively, the practices of religious harmony and freedom are referred to both Islamic religion and Pancasila values. The two normative references are positioned in line. Thus, even for the people, Pancasila has a spirit of Islam, because the framers of Pancasila (and Konstitution UUD 1945) are Moslem like Muhammad Yamin and Sukarno. Consciously or not, the Islamic teaching viewed by those framers of Pancasila absorbed into the values of Pancasila. Therefore, it is fair enough that Pancasila and Islam have harmony and conformity, including the concepts of religious harmony and freedom.
