Abstract

In this article, the researcher analyzes and compares sacrifice for love in John Collier’s the Chaser and Jesse Stuart’s Love. The researcher then uses formalism theory in that the researcher analyzes and compares the characters’ sacrifice for love within the short stories themselves regardless the condition, place, and time when the authors wrote the short stories. At last, the researcher draws conclusion that in the similarities both short stories have similar theme, namely, love needs sacrifice. Both characters sacrifice a valuable thing, instead. Whilst, as to the differences, in John Collier’s the Chaser, the character sacrifices his pride and love for little money, in Jesse Stuart’s Love, sacrifices the life.

Abstract

Domestic violence is physical, psychological, sexual or financial violence that takes place within an intimate or family-type relationship and forms a pattern of coercive and controlling behavior. It is very common: research shows that it affects one in four women in their lifetime. Two women a week are killed by their partners or former partners. All forms of domestic violence - psychological, financial, emotional and physical - come from the abuser's desire for power and control over an intimate partner or other family members. Domestic violence is repetitive and life-threatening, it tends to worsen over time and it destroys the lives of women and children. Domestic violence has long been common in Afghanistan as depicted in Atiq Rahimi’s Patience Stone. The present article discusses the domestic violence against Afghan Women in the novel through the lenses of feminism and new historicism. It is also combined with Rabrindranath Tagore’s conception on woman.

Abstract

The male main character presented as the narrator in Poe’s The Tell Tale Heart is the interesting one described by Edgar Allan Poe. He is described as the character who suffers from the mental illness. He feels really anxious as he sees the old man’s eyes so that the feeling drives him to murder and mutilate the old man. How are the symptoms and type of mental illnes experienced by the narrator described by the short story? and how do the psychological problems give impacts to his life? are the two questions formulated in the study to understand the mental illness from which the male main character suffers. Here, literature can be discussed based on the psychological perspective. Hence, it needs literature and psychology and psychological criticism. Furthermore, to discuss further about what happens with the narrator’s psychology, it needs the psychological theory focusing to schizophrenia. Qualitative research is established to analyze the narrator’s utterances as the data. It is described that the narrator experiences anxious, delusion, and auditory hallucination. The two symptoms prove that he suffers from disorganized schizophrenia. This syndrome is marked by the narrator who experiences disorganized speech and behaviour. This syndrome makes the narrator desires to kill, kills, mutilates, deposits the old man without knowing the reason, and admits the deed.
