Abstract

This study tested the influence of confidence on the Arabic Semester Final Assessment through vocabulary mastery in class X students of MA Walisongo Sukajadi. Highlighting the importance of Arabic language mastery and the affective role of self-confidence, this study aims to analyze the direct and indirect influence of confidence on vocabulary-mediated Arabic PAS. Using a quantitative approach with simple path analysis, 101 students were used as purposive sampling samples. Data were collected from confidence questionnaires, vocabulary tests, and PAS scores; The instrument has been valid and reliable. The results of the analysis showed that confidence did not have a significant effect on vocabulary mastery (p=0,117). In addition, neither self-confidence (p=0,418) nor vocabulary mastery (p=0,634) had a significant influence on Arabic PAS. It was concluded that there was no significant mediating evidence of vocabulary mastery in the relationship between self-confidence and the Arabic Semester Final Assessment in this sample.

Abstract

The study of amr (command) and nahy (prohibition) occupies a significant position in both Arabic linguistics and Islamic legal theory (uṣūl al-fiqh). Traditionally, these two concepts have often been examined separately: grammar (naḥw) emphasizes structural forms, while uṣūl al-fiqh focuses on normative implications. This separation has created a methodological gap in interpreting Islamic law. The present study aims to integrate these perspectives in order to achieve a more comprehensive understanding. This research employs a qualitative method through a library research approach. Primary sources include classical works of grammar such as Ibn Hishām’s Mughnī al-Labīb and works of uṣūl al-fiqh such as al-Ghazālī’s al-Mustaṣfā and al-Shāṭibī’s al-Muwāfaqāt. The analysis identifies the grammatical forms of amr and nahy and then explores their legal implications within the framework of uṣūl principles. The findings indicate that amr, in grammatical terms, is characterized by the imperative verb (fiʿl al-amr), while nahy is marked by the prohibitive particle lā al-nāhiyah attached to the present tense verb (fiʿl al-muḍāriʿ). In uṣūl al-fiqh, the default meaning of amr is obligation (wujūb), and nahy is prohibition (taḥrīm). However, these meanings may shift to recommendation (sunnah), permissibility (ibāḥah), or reprehensibility (karāhah) if supported by strong contextual or textual evidence (qarīnah). These results highlight the importance of integrating grammar and uṣūl al-fiqh to ensure the precision of legal derivation.

Abstract

This study examines rhetorical deviations in the Qur’an, focusing on verses that are syntactically declarative but convey injunctive meaning, and vice versa. It explores how this phenomenon affects the derivation of legal rulings in Al-Jaṣṣās’ Aḥkām al-Qur’ān. Using qualitative textual analysis, the study combines linguistic and exegetical approaches, supplemented with comparisons to Prophetic traditions (ḥadīth) and scholarly opinions to support jurisprudential interpretations. The findings reveal that shifts between declarative and injunctive styles serve to emphasize deeper legal meanings. For example, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:233, although declarative, “And the mothers shall breastfee”, functions as a command regarding the nursing duration. Similarly, Surah An-Nur 24, while declarative in form, affirms specific obligations or prohibitions. Conversely, injunctive verses may carry declarative meaning, as in Surah At-Tawbah 9:5, clarifying the non-acceptance of hypocrites’ deeds, or Surah Al-Baqarah 2:125, where the directive to use the station of Abraham (maqām Ibrāhīm) underscores ritual significance. Overall, the interplay between declarative and injunctive styles reinforces the clarity of Islamic legal rulings, as exemplified in Surah Al-A‘rāf 7:29, where a declarative context transitions into an injunctive command to uphold justice and perform prayer.
