Abstract

Utilization of local food as alternative food sources in PapuaPapua Province has a potential biodiversity including local food sources. Local food in Papua that has been used as main sources of carbohydrate for the local people are sago, millet, and root crops (sweet potato, taro, and yam). Root crops are mostly cultivated and consumed by local people in the lowland to highland area, while the people staying at beach area generally consume sago as a primary food. Some kinds of sweet potato, taro, and sago were adapted and consumed by local people for generation. In this case, those commodities must be developing as primary food sources for local community and also as substitute for rice. Besides utilized as primary food and important materials for ceremonial customs by local people, local foods has also been initiated for developing product diversification by home industry. This article discussed utilization of local food of Papua as an alternative food source, with main emphasize on root crops and sago, to support regional and national food security.

Abstract

Prospect of pheromone sex development in controlling Spodoptera exigua on shallotThe main contraint in shallot cultivation is the high incidence of Spodoptera exigua. The pest causes significant damage on plant. To control the pest, farmers commonly use insecticides excessively. The intensive use of insecticides results in inefficiency and polluted environment. Therefore, breakthrough in controlling S. exigua is needed by using sex pheromone. Sex pheromone technology has been developed and tested in laboratory and in field and gave prospective results. Application of sex pheromone decreases the use of insecticide and production cost and increase farmers' income. Therefore, utilization of pheromone sex is prospective to be developed especially in shallot production centers and endemic for S. exigua.

Abstract

Strategy of biodiesel development base on coconut in MoluccasBiodiesel is an alternative fuel that can be produced from coconut oil through transesterification process using methanol and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as catalyst. Nowadays, the development of biodiesel is urgently required to reduce people burden due to the price and the uncertain supply of diesel fuel in small and remote islands. This paper gives the prospect of biodiesel development in Moluccas. The SWOT analysis results in the present study gave strategy for the development of coconut plantations in the Southeast and West of Southeast Moluccas Districts. Other strategy is for the development of biodiesel, that is useful especially for the people who live faraway from Ambon. The utilization of coconut is recommended not only for biodiesel, but also for product diversification. Alternative models/patterns of biodiesel development include a household, a small-micro, a commercial, or a nucleus-plasma pattern. Some steps are required to be carried out by the Government of Moluccas, namely: 1) establish a safe situation in Moluccas as some investors still hesitate to come there, 2) revitalize the existing coconut plantations, 3) establish integrated coconut agribusiness, starting from cultivation aspect, processing, up to marketing in various scales with corporate community orientation, 4) facilitate invest development and strengthening of local institutions, 5) push increase of biodiesel utilization as diesel fuel substitute, and 6) conduct technology transfer, training, and use unemployment people who graduated from the university as partner in business of biodiesel industry.

Abstract

Prospect of maize flour for cookiesCookies is one of the favorite snacks consumed by community. The average consumption of dry cake in the big city and village in Indonesia is 0.40 kg/capita/year. Cookies processing do not need volume development as wet cake and bread, but the cookies have to be crispy, imperishable to water, hard and unbroken easily. This relates with the physiochemical characteristic and functional of maize flour. Maize flour has hard texture, relatively low gluten content (< 1%) with amylograph features processing the cold viscosity (240620 BU). This papers described the results of research relating with the nutrition content, functional characteristic, and the construction of dry cake from maize flour. The cookies made from maize flour have good nutrition quality and adequate processing feature, substitution towards the wheat flour until the level 5080% with the receiving level of highly preference (organoleptic). Supported by the recipe of dry cake that popular in the recent time were using the corn based material for example corn flake, coco chip, corn crispy. This indicated the opportunity of utilizing maize flour corn powder that has already received by the modern community who processing the high prospect to be developed.

Abstract

Communication strategy in developing food independencyRole of agricultural development communication is important to build food self-suffiency and diversification as the main base of food independency and food security. Food independency will be accomplished if its development comes from people initiative as an awareness to build modern farm industry with effective and efficient communication strategy support. Adoption of innovation technology by means of communication will boost productivity and product quality, decrease loss of production, increase value added of production with farmer empowerment and participation approach, and strengthen farmers' institutions and competitiveness. To empower the farmers, development of single commodity agribusiness cooperation such as rice or maize will facilitate transformation of information on technology and farm management from variety of sources for the farmers. Government policy to develop centers of agricultural information at production centers as agribusiness development area is required to build food independency and food diversification based on local production with effective communication system support. Communication information system based on cooperation and social capital with stakeholders partnership approaches (government, businessmen, university, research and development institutions, social institutions, etc) will accelerate accomplishment of food independency in suburb areas.
