Lexicon
Lexicon, Journal of English Language and Literature, is an open access, peer reviewed, academic journal published by the English Department, Universitas Gadjah Mada in cooperation with the English Studies Association in Indonesia (ESAI). It is devoted primarily to the publication of studies on English language and literature. It publishes original articles written exclusively in English twice a year in April and October. Manuscript submission is free of charge and open all year round to any author all across the globe.

<![CDATA[This graduating paper discusses the psychological disorder found in the character Mr. Harvey. The objectives of this paper are to find out the cause that could make Mr. Harvey as a killer and also a rapist and, to study the childhood memories that influence his behavior in the development of his personality.This study applies library research method. The data and other supporting references are gained from library and websites. This study uses Psychoanalytic Approach to find psychological disorder in analyzing the character, Mr. Harvey, and the coherence of every evidences that show Mr. Harvey’s background.In this study the present writer finds that it is the traumatic experience of Mr. Harvey that makes him suffer from psychological disorder. The types of psychological disorder found in the character are; Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD), and Pedophilia.]]>

<![CDATA[This research attempts to describe the kinds of flouting of Grice‟s Cooperative Principle maxims and explain the type of maxim mostly and least flouted in the headlines and taglines which are found in two magazines, Travel+Leisure and Wine Enthusiast. It is also aimed to see whether the headlines and taglines are able to describe the products or services. This study is presented within the framework of pragmatics. The result shows from 60 data found, 14 of the headlines and taglines in the Travel+Leisureand 16 in Wine Enthusiast magazine are mostly identified flouting the combination of maxims; maxim of Quantity and Quality. In addition, the maxim of Quality and the maxim of Manner are least flouted by the headlines and taglines in both magazines. The result also shows that the headlines and taglines are unable to fully describe the products or services unless the body copy is also provided.]]>

<![CDATA[This research aims: 1) to find out the differences and similarities between Indonesian and English noun phrases, 2) to explain the effects of the differences and similarities between Indonesian and English noun phrases on the translation products. By using contrastive analysis Indonesian and English constructions of noun phrases are contrasted to get the differences and similarities by which the data are analyzed. The results show that Indonesian and English constructions of noun phrases have similarities and differences which create problems in translation. Those noun phrases which have differences create more problems in translation than those having similarities.]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to describe the racial issues found in Othello and to analyze the influence of the issues on the characters in the play. In finding racial issues, the present writer analyses dialogues between the characters in the drama implicitly and explicitly.The author uses Abrams‘ objective approach and also some references to classify the racial issues and along with the characters based on the types of racism such as individual racism, passive racism, active racism, and internalized racism. The data were obtained by observing the play without being influenced by materials outside of the text.The result of this study indicates that there are racial issues in this play. The racial issues have a very significant effect on the characters‘ view, including Othello‘s, of the existence of black people. Othello becomes racist against himself and loses the confidence of being black, hence the cause of the fall of Othello. ]]>

<![CDATA[This article analyzes Maya Angelou‟s poem “Woman Work”. This poem talks about identity which is described by Maya Angelou through her feelings and ideas. The objective of this research is to study Maya Angelou‟s search of identity which is depicted through the poem.This article uses an expressive approach because this approach is the most suitable for learning the poet‟s perspective on woman identity through her works. Library research is employed to support the analysis.The result of the analysis implies that the speaker‟s position is a woman who has a role in society as a mother, worker and slave. The speaker carries out all jobs in the house and outside. However, the speaker expresses a process of her journey to find her identity which is reflected in the poem. The speaker tries to prove that identity is an important part of her qualities that must be maintained.In this poem the speaker indicates that she becomes a woman who is more confident and proud. It is the result of her process of maturity that is expressed by her that makes her realizes the truth of her identity. The speaker reveals the process of her life that is faced by her to display that she is a strong woman.]]>

<![CDATA[The use of sentence fragments is generally discouraged in good English writing because they lack one or more essential components of a sentence, namely a subject and/or a predicate, and thus are grammatically unacceptable. However in fiction writing, the use of sentence fragments is not only quite common in dialogue, but in narration as well. The present study analyses sentence fragments in the narration of the first novel of the young-adult science-fiction trilogy The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins, to investigate the types of fragments employed in the novel and their classification based on syntactic structure in the form of dependent-clause fragments and phrase fragments. The sentence fragments were further analysed for their use based on the context of their preceding sentences. The use of sentence fragments in the novel basically serves the function of creating emphasis or stressing important points in the story.]]>

<![CDATA[This paper discusses the usage of participle as seen in The Jakarta Post Headings. The Jakarta Post is considered as a representative newspaper especially for Non Native English Language Learners for it is mostly written by Indonesian journalists using good standard of English. The data of this research are taken from The Jakarta Post edition September 6 until October 6, 2012. The headings are classified based on the type of participle they contained. Afterwards, they are analyzed based on their context in order to figure out the meaning they might contain. Lastly, this paper talks about the prevalence of the participle in The Jakarta Post headings which may reflect the preference of participles used by Indonesian authors in expressing their idea in English. As the result, this paper points out the 5 patterns of present participle, and 6 patterns of past participle used in The Jakarta Post, their meaning, and their frequency.]]>

<![CDATA[This study analyzes the idioms and its translation strategies used in novel Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. RThe rsearcher classifies the translation strategies by using accuracy analysis. The result of this research shows that there are three strategies used by the Indonesian translator. The first strategy is idiom to idiom, which means transferring idioms in English into idioms in Indonesian. This method is used when two idioms, in both English and Indonesian, contain the same form and meaning. Second method is paraphrase, which means transferring idioms in English directly into its real meaning in Indonesian. This strategy is the most frequently used considering the fact that it is very difficult to find idioms in Indonesian that has the same meaning and form with the idioms in English. The third method is literal translation. In some cases, idioms in English can be literally translated. This kind of case is specifically occurs when an idiom happens to be part of a dialogue or informal sentence.]]>

<![CDATA[This research attempts to investigate the non-observance of Gricean maxims in the movie series Sherlock Holmes. In particular, it attempts to identify and classify the flouting of the maxims found in the movie. The data used in this research are dialogues containing expressions of the non-observance of Gricean maxims. Based on the data analysis, 75 cases of the flouting of Gricean maxims were found: 20 (26.6 %) cases showed the flouting of the quality maxim, 8 (10.6%) the flouting of the quantity maxim, 17 (22.6%) the flouting of the relevance maxim, 20 (26.6 %) the flouting of the manner maxim, and 10 (13.3%) the flouting of a combination of maxims. It was found in this research that the flouting of the quality maxim and the flouting of the manner maxim are considered as most commonly used strategies in the movie.]]>
