Abstract

The avifauna of the Botanical Gardens at Bogor has long attracted ornithologists, both among resident scientists and among newcomers whose first encounters with Javan birds took place here. The present checklist briefly enumerates the bird species observed in the Gardens during the past twenty years. Only a brief discussion is given concerning decreases in some species, as this is discussed more fully in van Balen et al. (1986) and Diamond et al.(1987)

Abstract

Tanjung Puting National Park is located near the south-western corner of the island of Borneo, in Central Kalimantan province at 112 deg E, 3 deg S, and covers an area of 296,800 hectares. The park contains the largest and best representation of south western Borneo's original coastal plain habitats, particularly the predominant heath and peat swamp forests, which occupy a much larger extent here than in any other protected area in Borneo.

Abstract

Since 1984, three surveys were conducted along the east coast of Sumatra. Several coastal wetlands appeared to be of international importance for waterbirds (according to the criteria of the Ramsar Convention). More than 10,000 large waterbirds were identified, including large numbers of Milky Storks Mycteria cinerea and Lesser Adjutants Leptoptilos javanicus,, and over 100,000 migratory waders (28 species) were counted. The observation of a minimum total of 3,800 Asian Dowitchers Limnodromus semipalmatus indicates that the east coast of Sumatra is the main wintering area of the species. In areas of high conservation importance, data were collected on habitat and threats. Several of these areas face heavy reclamation pressure, which necessitates urgent conservation action.

Abstract

Almost no ornithological fieldwork has been done in the montane regions of Kalimantan in recent decades (Holmes & Burton 1987). We spent 10 days from 28 August to 6 September 1986 observing birds in Gunung Nyiut Wildlife Refuge, West Kalimantan (110(1 E, 1°N) and hope that our records . will contribute to the distributional knowledge of the avifauna of Borneo.

Abstract

A selection of sites on the north coast of West Java was surveyed for White-eyes Zosterops between March 1984 and December 1985. Javan White-eye Zosterops f1ava was recorded at Pulau Dua, Muara Gembong and Tanjung Sedari. White-eyes were not seen at Pulau Rambut, Muara Angke, or on the coast between Indramayu and Cirebon. z. flava was seen only once in mangrove, preferring relic stands of coastal forest. This favoured habitat is now much reduced and fragmented, and remains under further human pressure, thus z. F1ava should be 1isted as threatened in Java.
