Abstract

We report on a bird survey in and near Gunung Lumut Protection Forest in East Kalimantan, and evaluate our results against the BirdLife International criteria for recognition as an Important Bird Area. Five globally threatened species (Storm 's Stork Ciconia stormi, Bomean Peacock-pheasant Polyplectron schleiermacheri, Large Green Pigeon Treron capellei, Short-toed Coucal Centropus rectunguis and Blue-headed Pitta Pitta baudii) were encountered, as well as 91 species endemic to the Sundaic Lowland Forest biome, and up to 1% of the biogeographic population of the congregatory Storm's Stork. Based on these observations, we recommend Gunung Lumut Protection Forest to be included in Birdlife International 's Important Bird Area network.

Abstract

The status of the Pied Imperial Pigeon Ducula bicolor in Nusa Tenggara (Lesser Sundas) is unclear, whilst the Pink-necked Green-Pigeon Treron vernans is unknown east of Sumbawa. We document observations of these two species on Flores and surrounding islands, and conclude that the Pied Imperial Pigeon is probably resident in western Flores and the Komodo area, whereas the Pink-necked Green-Pigeon has probably colonised Flores within the last 5-l 0 years. Green-Pigeons in the region should be carefully examined in the future.

Abstract

This paper documents the first island records of five migrant waders on Flores, Nusa Tenggara, based on 21 brief surveys in east-central and south-central Flores. On 8 October 2004, four Asian Dowitchers Limnodromus semipalmatus and a Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus were seen on Pangabatang Island, a small sand islet off Maumere. At Tambak Koliaduk aquaculture ponds (Maumere), two adult Ruff Philomachus pugnax were recorded on 5 December 2004, and a Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata on 19 December 2005 . Finally, two Broad-billed Sandpipers Limicola falcin ellus were obser-Ved at Ende estuary in south-central Flores on 17 October 2006. Given the relatively low survey effort in the region, it is likely that most of these species are regular visitors in small numbers to Flores and Timor.
