Abstract

Populations of F1, F2 and BC1F1 were formed from an interspecific cross between green-flowered Jatropha curcas and red-flowered J. integerrima (dwarf type) to observe for segregation in flower colors and to select for ornamental segregants. The crossing to produce F1 and BC1F1 was successful only when J. curcas was used as the female parent. The suitable time for crossing was between 08:00 – 13:00 o’clock with fruit setting rate of 65-78%. The F1 segregated into white- and pink-flowered plants. While flowers of the F2 population segregated into nine different colors, viz. light green, green, white, very light pink, light pink, pink, deep pink, very deep pink, and red. When J. curcas was backcrossed by a pink-flowered F1, its BC1F1 progenies segregated into green, light green, white, very light pink and light pink flowers. While another set of BC1F1 progenies obtained from a white-flowered F1 parent segregated into green, light green, and white. The segregating progenies in both sets showed smaller plants than jatropha and bore colorful flowers suitable for ornamental purpose. Six plants were chosen and registered at Kasetsart University and the Thai Department of Agriculture as commercial cultivars, ‘Kamphaeng Saen 1’ to ‘Kamphaeng Saen 6’. Keywords: ornamental jatropha, interspecific cross, flower color, crossing durations

Abstract

The effort to fulfill the need of rice through the improvement of dryland productivity can be viewed as a more environmentally-friendly way. This research used 36 rice genotypes in M1 generation that were grown hydrophonically under drought stress level of -0.03 MPa. The identifications were conducted based on peroxidase isozyme marker. The isozyme patterns in zymogram were binary-coded by visual scores for each genotype, based on the thickness and the number in the appearance of bands on certain migration distance. The migration distances were measured based on values of Rf. The similarity coefficients were calculated using Dice’s coefficient that were used to construct dendrogram using the UPGMA employing the SAHN from the NTSYSpc 2.02. The results showed that the most resistant genotype under drought stress was R-4, and the genetic relationships among the genotypes were divided into two main groups, aromatic and non-aromatic group, in which some genotypes experienced the reduced levels of aromatic character (R-8 and R-9) and the drought resistance character (IU-2, IU-3, IU-4, IU-5, IU-6, IU-7, and IU-8), but there were some genotypes to able to improve the resistance under drought stress (R-2, R-3, R-5, R-6, R-7, IT-4, IT-5, and IT-7). Keywords:  drought resistance, gamma irradiation, peroxidase isozyme, rice, sodium azide

Abstract

The research aimed to determine the tolerance limit of soybean genotypes toward salinity stress, plant growth and physiological characteristics. It was conducted in green house, from April to August 2013. The study involved two activities.  The first activity for evaluating a salinity stress, consisted of four levels of soil salinity (EC): 0.9; 4; 7; 10 dS m-1 and eleven genotypes. The second one to obtain information about changes in physiological and morphological characteristics of soybean affected by salinity stress. The second activity concisted of two soil salinity levels (EC): 1.52 dS m-1 and 8.58 dS m-1. The results showed that at salinity 10 dS m-1, all varieties/genotypes were not able to survive until the age of 43 days after sowing (DAS). At salinity 4 dS m-1, total plant dry weight of most geno-types soybean decreased by 48.14%, while the salinity of 7 dS m-1 total plant dry weight of all soybean decreased by 64.89%. Concentration of K and Na in soybean leaves were higher than those in soybean root tissue. The content of K and Na in leaves and roots of most soybean genotypes increased as soil salinity increased from 1.52 to 8.58 dS m-1, except for genotype G11. Keywords: leaf chlorosis, necrosis, salinity tole-rant, soybean genotype

Abstract

Groundnut is the most important pulse crop in East Nusa Tenggara (ENT); however, the crop yield in ENT is low due to erratic climatic condition, drought stress, and low yielding ability of most cultivated genotypes. Local Rote is a well-known local groundnut variety in ENT, which is a potential superior variety and parental source due its large seed size and high yielding ability. Information on its resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses is important for its future development. Five groundnut genotypes, Local Rote and check varieties were elucidated to identify drought resistant genotypes. The study was carried out in a split-plot design with three replicates in two locations during dry season 2013. Two irrigation regimes (optimum and stress conditions) were assigned as main plot and 5 groundnut geno-types as sub-plot. Research results revealed significant effect of irrigation by genotype interaction on observed yield and yield compo-nent characters in both locations. Seed yields of most tested genotypes were below their yield potential. Local Rote yielded best over two locations (1.26 t.ha-1 seed yield). Yields of check varieties were below 1.0 t.ha-1. Local Rote was considered tolerant to drought based on STI, GMP, SSI and YL selection indices. Keywords: groundnut, local, variety, drought, tolerance

Abstract

Biodiversity of Rottboellia cochinchinensis from different areas were studied by morphological traits and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis for classify of an allelopathic ability. The correlation of the similarity/distance between AFLP markers (Jaccard coefficient) and morphological traits (Euclidean distance) was significant with r = − 0.84**. Itchgrass could be divided into two groups from both UPGMA and STRUCTURE analyses: the group A consisted of itchgrass from Chaehom-Lampang, Si Thep-Phetchabun, Phrom Phiram-Phitsanulok, Amphur Muang-Nakhon Sawan, Kamalasai-Kalasin, Amphur Muang-Chachoengsao and Bang Yai-Nonthaburi, whereas itchgrass from Amphur Muang-Chiang Mai, Pak Chong-Nakhon Ratchasima and Kamphaeng Saen-Nakhon Pathom constituted the group B. Allelopathic properties of itchgrass as representative from different group were determined in bioassay test, the result showed that the aqueous extract of itchgrass from Chaehom-Lampang area has a strong allelopathic ability on growth of Echinochloa crus-galli L., Bidens pilosa L. and Lactuca sativa L. than the other group. The molecular analysis was strongly supported in morphological analysis clustering with bioassay test for allelopathic ability, specific morphological traits were soft trichomes, and the dark purple stems and roots which can be used for the preliminary classification of allelopathic ability. Our findings suggest that classification of itchgrass by morphological traits is related to the analysis of the genetic relationship of itchgrass with AFLP analysis, that allowing the assessment of the bio-diversity of itchgrass and their allelopathic potentials.

Abstract

Black pepper plantation area in Lampung province (the biggest producer area within Indonesia) has decreased from time to time, which might be related to unfavourable environmental condition. The aim of this study was to assess which environmental factors are positively or negatively correlated with productivity in particular yield of two local varieties of black pepper plant (Natar 1 and Natar 2) in Lampung province.  Two observational studies were carried out in the present study i.e. phenological development and productivity of black pepper productivity in related to various environmental factors. Our results showed that productivity of two varieties were significantly affected rainfall, light intensity and micro humidity. Dry matter yield was positively correlated with rainfall, both in Natar 1 and Natar 2. It was concluded that among environmental factors affecting productivity of black pepper, rainfall intensity was the most influencing factor with a positive relationship with the productivity. Keywords: Black pepper, climate, cultivar, environment, Indonesia

Abstract

One of the agricultural public commodities in Indonesia which still cannot fulfill its domestic consumption needs is soybean. The objectives of the research, which was conducted in Karawang Regency, West Java, Indonesia, were to: (i) identify the suitable area for soybean plantations in paddy fields, (ii)  assess the development of soybeans in land use and socio-economic context, and (iii) plan the spatially soybean plantation. A soil survey and land evaluation for soybean was completed. IKONOS imagery was applied to delineate paddy fields while a dynamic system modelling was developed using Powersim 8.0 software. The results of the research showed that the suitability class for soybean plantation in the paddy fields of Karawang Regency ranges from unsuitable (N) to suitable (S2), with limiting factors being temperature, fertility, nutrients retention, slope, erosion, rooting media and toxicity. Very limited arable land  has been used so far for soybeans plantations due to low economic returns. The model predicts that, should the development of soybean continues in its business as usual path, a deficit of soybean will occur in 2030. The model provides alternative scenarios to reduce the deficit. Prioritization was done spatially using the suitable land gradually, corresponding to the government budget availability.
