Abstract

This research descibes about the analysis of the characters in The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris. These characters is very interesting to be analyze because they appeared the similarity in serial killer, and also the diffrences in style. Both of them, comparing in the development of their pscycological problems by their chilhood traumatic experiences. The writer uses the psychological approach by Sigmund Freud who divided three human psyche zones Id, Ego and Superego. Also the Self Defence Mechanism that proposed by Anna Freud. In this research, the writer applies the qualitative research by using descriptive method. As the result of the analysis, the writer finds that despite of these characters, Buffalo Bill who is the traditional method in serial killer and Hannibal Lecture who is categorized as sophisticated serial killer. Both of them applies their self defence mechanism as the tools to achieve their goals.Keywords: psychoanalysis, self-defense mechanism, sublimation, trauma

Abstract

This research analyzed Patrick Süskind’s patriarchal Ideology as a male author that is presented through the women's character and the storyline of Perfume; the story of murderer.  This analysis applies Feminist Criticism from Millet’s theory: Sexual Politics, which could show a man biased-perspective about women’s inferiority in their works as implies as their strong influence on Patriarchy by way of a writer. This research is an intrinsic analysis which the analysis is processed just limits on storyline and intrinsic element of the work without external factor to be included on. The result of the analysis that researcher find from the novel is a few kinds of negative stereotypes of the female characters’ description. Then, in the analysis of women relation upon male characters in the story, the researcher also finds male characters’ perspective in the plotline, as same as author’s patriarchal ideology about inferiority of women’s ability as innate. This chase strengthens male domination upon women is so blatantly and moreover this novel can be judged as per medium of male author to defend the existence of patriarchal ideology.Keywords: Women’s stereotypes, male author, women representation, sexual politics, patriarchal existence

Abstract

This study discusses the types and meaning of onomatopoeias found in Garfield (2006) comic. In collecting the data, the writer used observational ethod and note taking technique (Sudaryanto, 1993). In analyzing the data, referential identity method (Sudaryanto, 1993) is applied. The types are analyzed by referring to Ullman’s (1962). The meanings are analyzed and strengthened by using the lexical meaning (Lyon, 1995) and contextual meaning (Ullmann, 1962) theories.The results show that there are two types of onomatopoeias found in the comic, the primary and secondary onomatopoeias. The primary onomatopoeia is the direct imitation of a sound produced by an object while secondary onomatopoeia comes from the sound combination produced by the specific characteristic of an object and its movement. In addition, the meanings of onomatopoeias derive from the lexical and contextual meanings. The lexical meaning refers to the dictionary meaning and the contextual refers to the context of an onomatopoeia in the comic line. From 15 data, the dominant type found is the secondary onomatopoeia.Key words: onomatopoeia, primary onomatopoeia, secondary onomatopoeia, lexical meaning, contextual meaning

Abstract

This study is aimed to describe the types and the functions of code switching which are uttered by the characters in the novel 9 Summers 10 Autumns. In collecting the data, non participatory observational method (Sudaryanto 1993) was applied. In analyzing the data, Hoffman’s theory (1996) is referred to analyze the types of code switching and Gumperz’s theory (1982) is referred to analyze the functions of the code switching. Presenting the result of analysisis is done formally and informally. After analyzing the data, the writer finds three types of code switching. They are inter-sentential switching (fifteen times), intra-sentential switching (four times), and emblematic switching (twice). Meanwhile, there are four functions of the code switching; message qualification, addressee specification, interjection and personalization. It means, there are two functions that do not appear in the data; quotation and reiteration, because the characters never quote other people’s ideas or repeat utterances from other language. Keywords: code switching, types of code switching, functions of code switching
