Abstract

This article highlights the techniques used by J.M. Rodwell in translating some defensive verses of Quran from Arabic into English. The data are the defensive verses from surah Al Baqarah190-193, Al Hajj:39, and Ali Imran:200. In this research, the writer firstly analyzes the contextuall meaning of the defensive verse which is inspired by Tafsir Ibn Kathir (2009) and the history of the Prophet Muhammad by M. Husain Haikal (2006). Then the analysis focuses on the techniques used by the translator. In analyzing the techniques, there are two main theories used. The main theory is proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (cited in Fawcett 1997) and the supporting theory is proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). The data analyzed are at word and phrase level.  The result of the analysis discovers that the contextual meaning of the verses refers to the command of war which is only permitted to those who are attacked for the purpose of self-defense and defending Islamic ideology. The techniques of translation used by Rodwell in translating them are literal translation, amplification, calque, adaptation, reduction, transposition, compensation, and modulation.Key terms: the Quran, defensive verse, techniques of translation

Abstract

This thesis is a semiotic analysis of a popular American cartoon comedy, South Park. Focusing on the first season of its airing, the study elaborates thirteen episodes of the series. The study is aimed to analyze the signs in the show and to describe the codes in which those signs are organized. The method in collecting the data is based on Berger’s concept of important sign and is analyzed with Chandler’s method of semiotic analysis, including the three-part model of codes. The study finds 21 important signs along with their meanings. In analyzing the data, the collected signs are analyzed by giving a brief explanation of the text as proposed by Chandler. Those sign is elaborated within Hjemslev’s order of signification to describe the message and value in two levels of meaning, denotation and connotation. After the main issues in the signs’ messages and values are collected, the analysis of codes is conducted by referring to those main issues. The study results in some sub-codes divided into three main codes. Social codes as the socio-cultural dimension of sign include social critique, human rights, as well as race and ethnic tolerance. Characterization and sarcastic humor are classified as textual codes, the textual medium in delivering messages and values. Social hypocrisy as the interpretative code reveals the general perspective in interpreting sign. Keywords: semiotics, sign, codes, South Park

The purpose of this study is to uncover the development of the reader responses to Annie on My Mind. The responses in this study are classified based on the period of the emergence, the responses that turned up in the first period (1982-2002) and the responses that turned up in the second period (2003-2012). Responses that turned up in each period are also divided into the pro and the contra. In the first period responses turned up lead to the question of the issue (the message). While in the second period it develops to the element of fiction. This is because of the different horizon of expectations of the readers in each period, as well as things that affect different horizon expectations. From the responses in these two periods, the work is not considered a proper education especially for students. However, this work is considered appropriate for the target readers, namely homosexuals, in terms of the content (the message) which is considered to represent the issue of homosexuals that exist in the society. Keywords: Reception Theory, Horizons of Expectation, Homosexuality, Lesbianism

Abstract

In this article the author wants to show the experiences of women from various backgrounds , namely China , America , Australia , Europe , and Africa through five different stories. The author also looks at the culture of patriarchy underlying these writings. In this study, the author uses the theory of gynocriticism of Elaine Showalter , who suggested the importance of discussing the works of women from female perspectives. From this study, the authors concluded that women writers are trying to present that being a woman was difficult , both as a young woman, as well as middle-aged . Proven by the failure of male figures in the short stories to understand the thoughts and desires of women Furthermore, the author concludes that patriarchal environments create obstacles for women to be heard or understood. Keywords : short stories , works of women, world literature, feminist criticism
