Abstract

Seven species of Zingiberaceae were investigated for their antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. Extract of grinded rhizome was centrifuged at 10.000 rpm for five minutes. This study used completely randommized design in nested pattern with three replications. The first factor was the tested microbe and the second was the fresh extract of the ginger rhizome. The result showed that fresh extract of red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum) gave the highest inhibition to the growth of S. aureus (15.83 mm) and E. coli (15.33 mm) while elephant ginger (Z. officinale var. Roscoe) gave the highest inhibition growth of C. albicans (10.7 mm).Key words: antimicrobial, ginger, microbial pathogen

Abstract

The research on morphometry variation of Papilio polytes L. (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) was conducted on December 2011 until April 2012 in West Sumatera (Padang Panjang, Padang and Marak Island). Papilio polytes were directly collected from the field and morphological measurement was conducted in Genetic Laboratory, Biology Department, Andalas University Padang. The morphological characters were significantly different among males. Those characters were forewings length, hindwings length, antenna length, eyes distance, foreleg length and wing venations. While differentiation also found among females. Those characters were forewings length, hindwings width, foreleg length and wing venations. There was a high of female morphological differentiation between Padang - Marak island and Padang Panjang – Marak Island. Male individual had low variation between that places. Keywords: variation, morphometry, Papilio polytes, West Sumatra
