Abstract

The research about effect of fungicide (Dithane M-45) on growth of corn (Zea mays L.) and spore density of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) had been done from August to November 2013 in a wire house at Laboratory of Plant Physiology, Departement of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, Andalas University. The research used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 7 treatmens and 4 replications. The treatments were varions doses of Dithane M-45; A (0 g/l), B (1,5 g/l), C (2,0 g/l), D (2,5 g/l), E (3,0 g/l), F (3,5 g/l), G (4,0 g/l). The results showed that Dithane M-45 decreased height and number of leaves of corn plants, leaf dry weight and spore density of AMF. The higher doses of fungicide used the fewer spores were obtained. Keywords: mycorrhizal, fungicide, Zea mays

Abstract

Bird species at oil palm plantation of PT. Andalas Wahana Berjaya (AWB), Dharmasraya, West Sumatra, have been studied from January to February 2014. This study aimed to identify bird species at the location. We  used direct observation method and mist netting. The result found 43 bird species, which belong to 21 families and 9 orders. Those 32 species were identified through direct observation, and 16 species through mist netting, while 5 species were confirmed through both direct observation and mist netting. Among the total, 5 bird species were protected and 2 were endemic. Keywords : bird species, directly observation method, mist netting, oil palm plantation.

Abstract

The study about “characterization of amilo-thermophilic obligat bacteria from Semurup Hot Spring” has been conducted from November 2013 to March 2014 in Laboratory of Microbiology, Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Science, Andalas University, Padang. The purpose of this study was to find out and analyze isolate amilo-thermophilic obligat bacteria. The result of this study showed that isolate SII-7 from Semurup Hot Spring survived at 70 ºC, that produced amylase with unique macroscopic characters: random, cream and smooth surface. The isolate SII-7 was bacille, Gram positive, has endospore as a product, motility and catalase positive.Keyword: Characterization, thermophilic obligat, bacteria, amylase.

Abstract

Wallowing activity is thought to have some important roles in the viability of wild boars (Sus scrofa L.). The characteristics of wallow and wallowing activity can show the ability of the boars to adapt with variety environmental challenges. Study on the characteristics of wallow and wallowing activity of the boars at the Biological Education and Research Forest (HPPB) Andalas University was conducted from September to December 2012 and from April to July 2013. This study was conducted by observing the characters of five wallows, while wallowing activities at two different wallows were observed by using camera traps. The results showed that wallows were found mainly rounded in shape, located near by habitual animal path with shadowed by dense canopy. The dominant substrate of wallows is particles of gravel and coarse sand. The rubbing trees were found around the wallows. From a total 197 observation days, we found 53 video and 51 photos which indicated the wallowing activities within 26 different visiting times. Those activities occurred in the morning between 6:00 am to 09:00 am, with the temperature around the wallows was 25⁰ C. Activities performed while wallowing is rolling, standing, resting and rooting. The result of this study may suggest that wallowing activity has more important function than thermoregulation as previously suggested. Keywords:  wild boar, characteristics wallow, wallowing activity, thermoregulation.

Abstract

A study on the structure ofbird communities in three types of habitatsat Andalas University, Padang, has been carried out from November 2012 to February 2013. This study aimed to determine the structure of bird communities in those habitats. We used mist-net to catch understory birds. We succesfully caught 72 individuals which belong to24 species, 20 genera, 12 families and 3 orders, including four species of  migratory birds. The highest abundance was found in the secondary forest, and the lowest was in herbaceous dominated vegetation. The diversity indiceswere generally moderate (H’= 1,897 – 2,466)Keywords: bird community, habitat type, mist-netting
