Abstract

Due to the centralistic broadcasting system, current commercial television stations cannot play a role to empower communities in the process of democratization at the local level.   On one hand, the commercial stations that broadcast nationally in Jakarta tend to show Indonesia through a Jakarta perspective. On the other hand, local news footages are predominantly negative events that have no relevance and insignificant to the problems of local communities. It then becomes a serious problem given the ongoing decentralization in Indonesia today. At the local level, people also need a means of social control so that political power does not concentrate in the hands of authorities in Jakarta. The concern is that there would be misused benefits that are contrary to the welfare of society. The Broadcasting Act 2002 was an effort to break these centralizing tendencies, which mandates the implementation of networked television broadcast system.

Abstract

Globalization has largely influenced women roles within many sectors, especially the economy. More and more women professionals exist in key positions of corporations. However, such phenomenon does not mean that gender disparity and discrimination ceased to exist.   In reality,   the percentage of women obtaining opportunities to actively participate in professional and the economy is still limited and below expectation, although needs to be admitted that such pleasant progress is getting better from time to time. Still, the phenomenon mostly happens in big cities. On the other side, women living in rural areas still have to endure discrimination and repression due to the dominating patriarchy culture. The main factor causing such disparity lies in the lack of education. In fact, the potential of women in leadership is as much as that of men, especially from the view of gender discourse characteristics. Moreover, leadership, which is the main key in good corporate governance, highlights the positive attitudes that lead to the best practices based on effective communication and teamwork while making the best use of technology to compete within the healthy global economic competition. Good governance, which also highlights equality, gives the same opportunities for men and women as well as giving women the opportunities to contribute their potentials for the sake of better economic development. Gender inequality should be understood as the hindrance in the development process,  especially economic development, because belittlement of women potential is the same of paralyzing half of the nation.

Abstract

This article argues that internal communication has two functions, namely as channels for sharing task information and creating an organizational climate conducive for trusting relations. As an essential part of an organizational communication system, internal communication is central to organizational success. In a changing environment, however, its effectiveness is subject to severe pressures of internal and external forces. A regular assessment is needed to keep internal communication effective. The best way to assess it is by undertaking communication audit, in which the results can be used by communication specialists to design the right program for improving the organization’s  communication system.

Abstract

This article tries to unveil the transformative power of the new media platforms that reshape a new pattern of political communication in our democracy. Furthermore, the characteristics of new media have contributed significantly to the renaissance of an enabling public sphere. The structure of new media transforms the restricted and deep-rooted top-down pattern of political communication into one that is decentralized and bottom-up today. There are, at least, five forms of transformation in the pattern of political communication as the result of utilizing various features of the new media technology, namely e-government,  political campaign,  citizen’s aspirations channel, and decentralized political education. Some trends of the application in the context of general election’s micro-political communication (citizen-to-citizen) are discussed succinctly, such as Vote Cerdas BDG, Orang Baik, Bersih2014, Check Your Candidates, Mata Massa, Rumah Pemilu, and Jari Ungu.
