Abstract

Regional development, which is an integral part of national development, is aimed more at matters of improving the quality of society, optimal economic growth, expansion of the workforce, and improvement of people's standards of living, for the sake of prosperity. This well-being is understood more holistically, which covers both economic and psychological well-being. One strategy that can be taken is to use the empowerment model. The articulation of this concept in indigenous peoples' context, which is still widely found in Indonesia, assumes a useful model and is ready to be implemented. This study tries to answer these questions. All of which are formulated based on the experience of researcher involvement for two and a half years. It used a qualitative approach to the phenomenological model. Research participants were determined by setting specific criteria (purposive). Data obtained through a process of depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGD), and structured observations which are then processed using inductive thematic analysis after going through a process of communicative and argumentative validation. The results of this study state that the efforts to empower indigenous peoples (specifically the Mentawai people) are realized through a local kinship system (muntoghat), which is also called uma. Because of the large number of muntoghat, the empowerment effort was then followed up using a broader local kinship system called inter-uma. In this uma and inter-uma, the participants are empowered socially, and economically (socio-economic). The process is then followed up with social and juridical institutionalization, and also the development of networks, involving business people, government, academics, and other independent institutions.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the causality between higher education and economic growth in Indonesia in 1980-2017. The econometric approach of this study used the Vector Auto Regressive (VAR) and Granger Causality Test. The Empirical results show evidence of unidirectional causality between higher education and economic growth in lag 1 with α of 10%. These results indicate that education as a form of investment in human resources will affect the economy. This study also shows that economic growth does not affect higher education. This unidirectional causality can be explained that the economic growth that occurs does not directly increase the overall income of the community, meaning that the positive impact of growth can only be enjoyed largely by a group of high-income people.

The data source used is secondary data in the form of the 2015 Ministry of Finance Report, as well as the publication of the Central Statistics Agency. The analysis used is the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) analysis where this test was carried out in 33 provinces in Indonesia (North Kalimantan was not used in the observation because it was a newly formed province). From the test results, it is found that: Capital Expenditure, HDI has a positive and significant effect on Economic Growth. Meanwhile, Electricity Accessibility has no influence on growth. This condition means that the economic growth in the Java Region is indeed higher than the economic growth outside Java.

Abstract

Economic growth is often cited as a significantly contributive factor reduction of the poverty rate. This study aims to investigate the economic growth and poverty among all areas within Sulawesi Island and to compare these two aspects among the island’s provinces. This study employs both comparative quantitative analysis to explore economic growth formulatively and qualitative manner for in depth analysis. The result reveals an escalation in both gross regional domestic product (henceforth regional GDP) and total population each year for the last ten years. However this situation is unable to boost the macro-economic growth; a reason for this condition is the population growth in the recent ten years possibly dominated by High birth rates. Yet, this condition does not lead to a drop in the demand for workforces, which implies that the number of the working-age population (which can help improve the regional per capita income) remains constant despite the population growth. Another possible factor of regional GDP escalation is the fact that the government policy, in its foreign cooperation implementation, does not contribute to the local workforces. Nevertheless, the rise in regional GDP is insignificant as it does not affect the local economic conditions. Hence, it proves that the fluctuation of economic growth does not affect the poverty rate.
