Abstract

Indonesias tropical climate has a significant potential in providing natural lighting to design buildings. Umas or pyramidal shaped house In its original condition (has not been modified/engineered), meaning that it is made of wood, having original elements and building design with openings Is believed to possess natural lighting for a construction that is assumed inadequate for productive activities. Seeing the existing activity pattern, a Ilmas house is not aimed just to rest but it is also to perfonn other activities, such as reading and working in the room. These activities require adequate support of room lighting. This study was conducted to verify the assumption telling that the lighting system of a limas house is insufficient productive activities during the day time. The study used a computerized simulation and field measurements to see the a priori condition of the limas house as the object of the study and then to compare the results of measurements. The result showed that the level of natural lighting In the house was almost the same that was 150 lux In average. This reinforced the assumption that the natural lighting level of the studied Ilmas house was insufficient to support productive activities In the day time. To get solutions in improving natural lighting condition of limas house, further studies are needed.

Together with the development of the economic activity types and the increasing economic potentials of the community of Ba/uwartis, we then find residential houses having mixing styles of Javanese, European, Chinese, and Islamic. The problems found In the field is the presence of absorption and adaptation of elements of Javanese culture and foreign cultures that create decoratlva typology of Bakri Zaeds family residence. The objective of this study was to Identify the decorative typology that is applied at Bakri Zaeds family residence. This study is qualitatively descriptive having explorative descriptive analysis approach. The factors to be examined are the characters of the decoration (motifs, pattems, materials, and color), and the style applied. Based on study results; it could be concluded that the typology of decoration of Bakri Zaeds family residence is attachment/eclectics of several styles, which are: Java, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Middle East, and China. There was no standardized character and style. Abstract

The objectives of this study were to identify and analyze the characteristics of dwelling pattems of Tengger Community at Wonokitri village. The method applied was deSCriptive. The results of the study show that the spatial structure of the traditional houses at Wonokitri village are based on Tengers adat or customary regulation on division of space that is called the seven po. The house functioning as a home stay that Is designated for tourists there are some additional spaces that Is not In accordance with the seven po concept anymore. The spatial structure of a home stay usually form front-back and left-right pattems that is based on the function and utilization of the spaces. In the traditional houses of Tengger community at Wonokitri village the hierarchical division of the space is based on the sacred and profane criteria defined by philosophy of Tenggers adat or customs about the Lord of the house. There are two pattems of house facing orientation towards the roads, that is North-South orientation and East-West one whereas most of the houses are facing to the west. Tenggers adat or customs philosophy is also applied in the pattem of buildings arrangement design. This can be seen from the absence of house fence beside the existing spatial distance pattem between houses, the pattems of the front yard and side yard, as well as the pattem of putting the side entrance doors.
