Abstract

The peel structureof Valencia orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) was examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and showed the distinct regions of the peel: the outer-yellowish part that was called the flavedo and the inner part of the peel that was called the albedo.  The flavedo has compact cells with oil glands embedded in it whereas the albedo contains of spongy cells with vascular bundles embedded in it. The ultrastructural examination of the albedo during development revealed the changes of albedo morphology from compact tissue to the loosely arranged tissue. In addition, the distribution of polysaccharide cell walls was observed with histochemical staining and later the distribution of peptic polysaccharide was conducted using anti-pectin monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Histochemical staining during development demonstrated the difference of abundance of polysaccharide at the tissue level.  Furthermore, the distribution of homogalacturonan (HG) was studied with mAb JIM5 that recognizes low methyl-esterified HG and JJM7 which labels high methyl-esterified HG. The observation at the fruit level was conducted using tissue printing and the result showed that low and high methyl-esterified HG was distributed almost similar at the fruit level. Further experiment at the tissue level was performed using Light Microscopy (LM) and revealed that HG was found more abundant in the albedo and vascular bundle followed by the flavedo and oil gland.

Abstract

A study on the effect of length time shading (approx 70 % of sun rise intensity) to the growth and yield of Camar mung bean variety was conducted in Nogotirto, Gamping, Yogyakarta. The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The treatment were 6 levels of length and time of shading of Camar mung bean variety, i.e.: shading at the whole life cycles (A), the first half life cycles (B), the second half life cycles (C), the first quarter life cycles (D), the second quarter life cycles (E) and no shading at the whole life cycles or control (F).The result showed that the length and time of shading affected the growth and yield of Camar mung bean variety significantly except for the number of root - pimples, the number of effective root - pimples and weight of 100 grain per plant parameters. In accordance with the control, the shading at the first quarter and second quarter or at last life cycles gave no significant different in the growth and yield. The yield of that treatments ware 1.77, 1.72 and 1.82 tons seed per hectare. While in accordance with the control, the shading at the first half, the second half and at the whole life cycles gave the lower growth and yields. The decreasing at the yields were 28.95, 32.96 and 42.36 %.

Abstract

The research was conducted to study the effects of drought stress conditions on the performance of vegetative and generative of various rice varieties on the different growth stages. The research was performed at field trial of Faculty of Agriculture, Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta, Kasihan Bantul, from March to June 2010. The research was designed using a factorial experiment that arranged in Completely Randomized Design 4 x 5 with three replications. The first factor was the varieties of rice i.e. IR 64, Menthik, Cisadane and Dodokan. The second factor was the period of drought stress at the difference plant stage, i.e at the vegetative period, booting period, heading period, grain filling period, and without drought stress or control. The results showed that Cisadane varieties had a higher tolerance to the drought stress than to all varieties. Moreover, the plant treated on drought stress at vegetative period had lower grain number per hill than the other drought stress period.

Abstract

Dange is a traditional food made from delicate wet sago starch and further roasted in forna. Dange has rectangle form, flat with approximately 0,5 cm thickness. In addition, dange is also well known for its light, tasteless, hardness and relatively not hygroscopy. To increase the quality of dange and improve its flavour, a research was performed to study the quality of dange substituted with mackerel fish meat. The treatment was arranged in two classifications factorial completely randomized design. The classifications were variation of mackerel fish meat (0%, 2%, 5% and 8%) and time of grill (1 minute, 2 minutes and 3 minutes). Furthermore, the dange product quality was tested chemical and sensory analysis. The chemical analysis consisted of moisture, protein, fat, ash and starch content. Whereas the different of dange product quality was tested sensory analysis using scoring test method and the consumers acceptance was tested by hedonic scale test method. It was found that the most liked dange was made from 5% substitute of mackerel fish meat at 1 minute grill. This dange had slightly brittle texture, yellow-white colour, fishy taste and relatively strong fishy flavour with 27.84% moisture, 3.98% protein, 0.50%fat, 2.48% ash and 57,78% starch content.
