Abstract

Undeniably, the teacher-centered learning approach has long been abandoned. From the preliminary observation conducted in an elementary school located in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, it is found that most of the teachers still maintain their role as the knowledge providers. In consequence, the motivation and participation of the students are low. Therefore, this study was aimed at describing the implementation of jigsaw technique in vocabulary acquisition and obtaining the students’ perception of the implementation of the technique. Method. This qualitative study collected data using observation on English learning in a classroom to obtain a description about the implementation of jigsaw technique in vocabulary acquisition. Both field notes and a checklist will be used to collect the data concerning with the students’ activities when applying the jigsaw technique. Moreover, a questionnaire will be spread to the students to obtain the students’ perception of the implementation of the technique. Results and Discussion. The application of jigsaw technique in learning has followed an appropriate procedure. In addition, the students also showed positive perceptions of the Jigsaw Technique. This technique can create a positive learning environment, support Student-Centered Learning (SCL), support cooperative learning, and help students gain skills. Conclusion. The jigsaw technique is useful for learning English, especially in gaining understanding. Considering the benefits that students gain after applying the jigsaw technique to learn English, this technique is also recommended for improving other English language skills, such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate whether is there a significant effect of Point-Counterpoint Strategy on Students’ ability in Speaking Skill or not. The research was conducted by using Quantitative Research especially  in Quasi-Experimental Design. The Population of the research was eighth grade of UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli that consisted of 287 students. The research  took sample which consist of 64 students by using Cluster Sampling Technique. The instrument used in collecting data was Directed Response Task. The instrument of  my research is sound record, handphone, and documentation.  The test was validated by three validators and it was stated valid. Then the researcher gave the pre-test and post-test to experimental class and control class to find the normality and homogeneity of the  sample. After conducting the research, the researcher analyzed the data and the result shows (1) the mean score of students’ ability  in pre-test of experimental class was 66,41 and control class was 61.10.  (2) The mean score of students’ ability in post-test of experimental class 87,22 and in control class was 70.00. (3) The result of testing hypothesis , the researcher found that tcount was 12.127 and ttable was 1.659. Since  tcount(12.127) ttable(1.659), it can be concluded that Ha is accepted. (4) There is a significant effect of Point-Counterpoint Strategy on students’ ability in speaking skill especially in expressing asking and giving opinion at the eighth grade of UPTD SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023.Furthermore, the researcher has some suggestion related to the research: (1) The English Teacher should use Point-Counterp oint Strategy in teaching Speaking especially in expressing asking and giving opinion material. Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the speaking elements that must be mastered by foreign learners. However, students still found difficulties when pronouncing English words. Therefore, tongue twister was thought to be one effective technique to help students articulate the English words. The research applied pre-experimental design with only one experiment class. The class consisted of 15 participants from English Education Departement Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Bulukumba and was chosen through purposive sampling technique. Statistical technique was applied to confirm the hypotheisis. Based on the test of significance result, it was found out that t test value is higher than the t table value (2.0351.708). This indicates that students’ pronunciation skills improved after students learnt with tongue twister which was combined with some other methods. Furthermore, it is also informed that there were some kinds of pronunciation errors made and the dominant errors found is phonetic errors due to the effect of students’ native language systems.
