Abstract

Sumbawa horse milk is one of pure milk of wild horses farmed by organic farmers in the island of Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The communities claim that milk has many benefits. In this study Sumbawa horse milk was effective as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus epidermidis (one of the bacteria caused acne). Antibacterial activity test performed by spread plate method and quantified by standard plate count. Percentage of the number of colonies after contact with  Sumbawa horse milk for 5 minutes (used acid control). The result of 25% is 99.96%, 12.5% is 99.99%, 6.25% is 99, 67% and 3.125% is 99.73%. This suggests that  Sumbawa horse milk has good antibacterial activity until 3.125%.

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is occurred due to lack of iron within the body, so that the amount of iron for erythropoiesis does not meet the requirement. Petai (Parkia speciosa Hassk) which is widespread in Indonesian archipelago, contain high existence of iron is supposed to be able to increase hemoglobin level in white mouse blood (Rattus norvegicus). The research was carried out by using petai from Wonosari whose made to dry extract by using freezedryer. Petai seed extract (Parkia speciosa Hassk.) injected to Wistar rat (Rattus norvegicus). Data analysis was using One Sample t-Test and ANOVA test in order to find out the effect of the doses towards pharmacological effect. The result showed that petai seed extract (Parkia speciosa Hassk) gave effect towards the enhancement of hemoglobin level (Hb) within white mouse blood (Rattus norvegicus). However, the optimum dosage was not able to be determined yet.

Abstract

Aedes aegypti is a vector for Dengue. The use of synthetic repellent cause several health issue. Zingiber officinale Roxb. “Cochin Ginger” essential oil (A) and Zingiber officinale Roxb. var rubrum essential oil (B) was used as a repellent for Aedes aegypti. Increasing of repellent activity was strived by formulating A and B with sesame oil and coconut oil as a base. The aim of this study was to compare repellent activity between A and B, to know the influence of oily base to repellent activity of A and B, to know the effective concentration of essential oil in oily base as a repellent.Isolation of essential oil was done by water and steam destilation. Quantitative and qualitative assays by GS-MS. Repellent activity was tested by three steps: initiation, effective consentration assay, and effective concentration of repellent activity. Essential oil on certain concentration (100%, 50% in the base, the effective concentration of SLD) and Lemon grass essential oil was applied on the surface of palm hand. The hand was put into 20x20x20 cm3 cage containing 25 female Aedes aegypti. The number of Aedes aegypti lied on the hand was noted to count protective capacity. First bite was counted as protective time. Analyse was done by One-way ANOVA and Post Hoc Test Tukey HSD (Homogeneous subsets) or Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney Test.  The result showed that A and B contain camphene, mirsene, 1,8-sineol, l-linalool, l-borneol, neral, geraniol, sitral, and α-kurkumen (only A) that quantitatively different. Statistic result showed that B has a greater repellent activity than A. Sesame oil base give a better effect on repellent activity of sesame oil compare than coconut oil. The effective concentration of Zingiber officinale Roxb. “Cochin Ginger” essential oil and Zingiber officinale Roxb. var rubrum essential oil in sesame oil and coconut oil was 75, 85, 85 and 90%, respectively.

Abstract

Banana is one of Indonesian food which has many pharmacological activities. Pisang kapas (Musa paradisiaca L.), one of Indonesian banana, is well known empirically as laxative, so it can be used in the treatment of constipation. It has been reported that both of chloroformic and ethanolic extract of pisang kapas have antidiabetic activities. However, fractination of those are not yet performed and report about their antidiabetic activities are not yet available. Here we investigated the effect of water-dissolved fraction of ethanolic extract of cotton banana to reduce the blood glucose level in rat model and identified its active ingredient. The oral glucose tolerance method with 60 min glucose loading time was used to induce hyperglicemic condition in rats, either in control group or treatment group. Glibenclamid (positive control), sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (negative control) and the fraction were orally given to the rats in a single dose. To measure blood glucose level photometrically, enzimatic reaction by using diagnostic reagent Glucose GOD FS is applied. Paper chromatography was utilized to identify the ingredient of the fraction qualitatively.  The fraction in dose of 0.25 g/kg reduced blood glucose level by 22.28 ± 0.76 %. The fraction contained reductants in addition to glucose, amino acids, and the acids in plants.

Abstract

Inappropiate antibiotic use was one of the main reason that caused pathogenic microorganism resistance, leads to ineffective treatment. One of those resistance bacteria is Staphylococcus aureus. The research for discovering new antibiotics can help with this issue. The peel of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) is one of the plants that has antibacterial compounds. The aim of this research is to prove and determine the clear zone value of n-hexane fraction of red dragon fruit’s peel againts Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 2593. The peel was maserated with chloroform, then fractinated by n-hexane. Futhermore, the antibacterial properties of the fraction was tested using Disc Diffusion (Kirby-Bauer) methode with 20 and 40 mg/mL concentrations. Ampicillin used as control positive, and Dymetil sulfoxida (DMSO) used as control negative . Based on the phytochemical screening of the fraction, the n-hexane fraction of the dragon fruit’s peel contain terpenoid and alkaloid. Clear zones produced by 40 mg/mL is 12.80±1,69 mm and for 20 mg/mL is 11.17±1,11 mm.

Abstract

Sambiloto herb (Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Nees.) and pegagan herb (Centella asiatica (L.) Urban) are excellent medicinal plants which are being developed as traditional for antidiabetic. The research aims to see the effect of combination from purified extract of sambiloto herb and pegagan herb of translocation of GLUT-4 protein in model type 2 diabetes mellitus rats-insulin resistance compared with the use of each purified extract. Test preparations were divided into 8 groups include three from combination purified extract of sambiloto herb and pegagan herb: I (912,1: 300), II (651,5: 500), III (390,9: 700) in mg/kg BW, IV (purified extract of sambiloto herb 1303 mg/kg BW), V (purified extract of pegagan herb 1000 mg/kg BW), VI (positive control metformin 45 mg/kg BW), VII (negative control CMC-Na 0.5%) and VIII (normal control). Parameters measured semi quantitative data translocation of GLUT-4 protein in cells muscles of the thigh (soleus muscle) rats using Immunohistochemistry methods. Test animals are of type 2 diabetes mellitus insulin-resistance was induced by fructose (1,8 g/kg BW) and fat-rich food (95% pellet, 5% egg yolks and 5 mL/ 200 g BW lard) for 70 days. Determination of insulin resistance used 3 parameters such as blood glucose levels, lipid levels (triglycerides, LDL, cholesterol, and HDL), and hypoglikemic tests with glibenklamid compared to normal controls animals. Insulin resistance test results using statistical analysis Independent Samples t-Test showed significant differences (p< 0.05) between normal rats with fat-fructose rats at day-50 and -70. This indicate fat-fructose rats indicated type 2 DM insulin resistance. Group of combination I (combination purified extract of sambiloto herb and pegagan herb (912,1: 300 mg/kg BB) showed effect of translocation of GLUT-4 protein was better than each purified extract with significantly p<0.05 with oneway ANOVA.
