Abstract

This paper explores the post-colonial themes of identity crisis, alienation, and cultural displacement in V.S. Naipaul’s A House for Mr. Biswas. Through a close reading of the novel, the study examines how the protagonist, Mr. Biswas, resists the oppressive control of the Tulsi family and asserts his individuality by striving to build a house of his own. Rather than conforming to the familial imperialism that mirrors colonial dominance, Mr. Biswas challenges it, making his pursuit of a home a powerful metaphor for post-colonial resistance and self-definition. The analysis highlights how Naipaul portrays the existential struggles of a marginalized individual within a fractured society shaped by colonial legacy. Using descriptive and analytical methods, with the novel as the primary source and scholarly literature as secondary support, this study reveals that Mr. Biswas’s journey is emblematic of the broader post-colonial quest for autonomy and identity. Ultimately, the novel affirms that reclaiming personal space is essential to overcoming cultural subjugation and achieving post-colonial liberation.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students' perceptions and challenges of the video-based projects implementation as a form of Merdeka curriculum in speaking for the General Communication subject. The first-semester students of English Education Department IAIN Lhokseumawe become the subject of this study. Moreover, the data were gained through the distribution of questionnaires and in-depth interviews, which were then analysed descriptively. The research results show that the majority of students responded positively to the use of video-based projects in speaking lessons. Students feel more confident, motivated, and capable of improving their speaking skills as well as other supporting skills such as pronunciation, editing, and scriptwriting. In addition, this project also encourages independence, creativity, and provides a more contextual and meaningful learning experience. However, this study also found several challenges faced by students, such as technical constraints, inadequate equipment, difficulties in scriptwriting, and psychological pressure due to teachers’ expectation. Therefore, technical support, adequate guidance, and adjustments to learning strategies are needed so that the implementation of video-based projects can run more optimally. Overall, video-based projects have proven to be relevant as a constructive and participatory learning method that aligns with the spirit of the Merdeka Curriculum.     Keywords: Merdeka Curriculum, project-based learning, speaking skill, video-based project

Abstract

In Bangladesh’s EFL context, English communicative competence plays a critical role in shaping students’ academic success. This study examines the impact of English language skills on the educational experiences of public university graduates and identifies key instructional and curricular gaps. Using a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, the study surveyed 100 graduates from three major public universities and conducted semi-structured interviews to explore their language challenges and perceptions. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative responses underwent thematic analysis. Findings reveal that although many graduates self-rated their English skills as “good,” significant deficiencies, particularly in speaking and writing, frequently hindered academic tasks such as essay writing, presentations, and research communication. Notably, over 60% of participants reported a mismatch between university English instruction and the language demands of academic work. Qualitative insights further emphasize the emotional struggles and performance anxieties associated with low communicative competence. The study highlights the pressing need for curriculum reforms that focus on English for Academic Purposes (EAP), provide interactive speaking opportunities, and incorporate performance-based assessments. These findings advocate for skill-based, context-aware EFL instruction to better support academic achievement and professional preparedness in Bangladeshi higher education.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of gamification on the motivation and engagement of first- semester students of  English course. The research involved 71 undergraduate students of Management Program, University of Merdeka Malang, who participated in a series of gamified activities, including digital quizzes and role-play simulations. Data were collected through pre- and post-intervention surveys based on Keller’s ARCS model, classroom observations, and attendance/activity records. Results showed a significant increase in students’ motivation across all four dimensions of the ARCS model, Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction (p < 0.05), after the introduction of gamification. Students reported higher levels of interest, enthusiasm, and willingness to participate, with a noticeable improvement in engagement and classroom dynamics. The findings suggest that gamification effectively enhances language learning by making it more interactive, enjoyable, and relevant to real-world business contexts. The study highlights the potential of gamification to increase student engagement and motivation in higher education, especially in Business English courses, without replacing traditional teaching methods. It is recommended that educators integrate gamification thoughtfully to complement existing pedagogical practices and improve learning outcomes.

Abstract

This qualitative study examines the intersection of ecocriticism and postcolonialism in Salman Rushdie’s novel Midnight’s Children, highlighting how these frameworks illuminate the emotional and psychological dimensions of his characters. Rushdie is a renowned writer who gained fame around the time British rule in South Asia was coming to an end. He is known for telling complex stories and exploring the inner thoughts of both male and female characters. His characters often struggle to find their identity in a society that marginalizes them. Many of his stories show feelings of loneliness, unfulfilled love, disappointment, betrayal, and failed dreams. Even when his characters are honest and loyal, they are often left out or ignored. By focusing on human emotion, nature, and culture, Rushdie highlights essential aspects of the human experience. He also shows how people feel and think during times of crisis, such as war. In these moments, emotions play a crucial role in helping people heal and rebuild themselves. This research examines how Rushdie integrates nature and postcolonial themes in his writing to enhance our understanding of both personal and collective struggles.

Abstract

The research aims to identify the types of speech acts found in the dialogue in the Treasure Island novel. This research was conducted with the help of Searle’s theory of speech acts (1975). A descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. The data in this research are in the form of dialogue among the characters in the novel. The data collection involved reading and identifying relevant dialogue that was recorded and analyzed based on speech act classification. Then, the data were analyzed by Searle’s theory into the five types. Based on the discussion, the researcher identified four types in the novel: directive, representative, expressive, and commissive. The speech acts uttered by characters in the novel are conveyed in both literal and non-literal ways. This analysis demonstrates that understanding speech acts enhances the interpretation of character interactions and the overall meaning of the text. The implication of the study is to become proficient in pragmatics, particularly in the theory of speech actions, to comprehend the speaker’s goal and ensure that the communication is realized.

Abstract

In today’s digital era, social media platforms are increasingly leveraged as tools for English language learning. This study investigates the influence of Jane Elisabet’s educational videos on learners’ self-confidence in speaking English. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered through classroom observation and semi-structured interviews with five English Education students who regularly engaged with Jane Elisabet’s video content. The findings indicate notable improvements in learners’ willingness to speak, pronunciation accuracy, and ability to construct basic sentences. Key contributing factors include the simplicity of the language, contextual relevance, and the presenter’s supportive and approachable delivery style. Grounded in Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis, this study emphasizes that reducing anxiety and fostering emotional support can significantly enhance second language acquisition. The results suggest that short, authentic video content on digital platforms not only supports linguistic development but also strengthens learners’ psychological readiness to communicate in English. These findings highlight the potential of social media-based videos as practical supplementary tools in English language education, particularly in boosting learners’ speaking confidence.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of English songs as a teaching strategy to enhance students’ listening comprehension in EFL classrooms, with a particular focus on teachers’ perspectives. Addressing the limited research on how teachers perceive and implement songs within listening instruction, the study adopts a qualitative descriptive design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six experienced EFL teachers from senior high schools in East Java, Indonesia, and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. The findings reveal that teachers view English songs as an effective tool for increasing student engagement, facilitating vocabulary development, and improving overall listening skills. Nonetheless, challenges were noted, including the complexity of language used in songs, cultural references unfamiliar to students, and the time required to prepare appropriate materials. The study concludes that, when integrated thoughtfully, English songs can serve as powerful tools for enhancing listening comprehension. The findings also underscore the significance of institutional support and targeted professional development in promoting the practical application of these tools in EFL teaching.
