Abstract

Waste management in the Nusa Penida tourism area, Bali Province, is a major concern in maintaining environmental and tourism sustainability. Serious problems related to waste management in the Bali region, especially Nusa Penida, inspired the Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Period 2 Nirwana KKN Team to carry out activities to empower the public. Through qualitative methods using Forum Group Discussions (FGD) and interviews, the KKN Team succeeded in identifying multidimensional waste problems, including cultural and structural dimensions in the region. Therefore, in formulating solutions, the focus should not only be on improving facilities, but also on increasing public awareness as a whole. And it is best if the initiation that is designed is bottom-up and prioritizing audiences from community groups. In this regard, the KKN Team developed a four-step solution, which includes education on waste sorting, a TOSS (Local Waste Processing Site) survey, introduction of eco-enzymes from organic waste, and the creation of the tools named Holzewiq to process plastic waste. Significant results can be seen in increasing public awareness regarding waste issues, fulfilling community aspirations regarding waste management facilities, and the effectiveness of TOSS. The Eco-Enzyme program and the Holzewiq tool also produce positive public response. The KKN team succeeded in processing 5 kg of inorganic waste into sustainable products. With active community participation, this project makes a real contribution to waste management and has the potential to create continuity in the long term.

Abstract

River pollution in Indonesia represents a significant environmental challenge that tends to escalate alongside the growth of human activities. The engagement of local communities in “citizen science” initiatives facilitated by the BrantaSae platform plays a crucial role in collecting scientific data, particularly in comprehending the extent of ecological harm. Participation in community service activities related to “citizen science” offers a viable approach to rectifying environmental degradation and enhancing public consciousness regarding the significance of ecosystem health. A notable endeavor in this realm involves the cleanup of waste within water sources like rivers and drainage systems, a campaign known as “RIVERlution”. Moreover, the cleaning process entails the categorization of the gathered waste materials. Analysis of the waste items retrieved from the study site reveals a predominance of plastic waste, with LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) emerging as the most prevalent polymer type. Thus, the findings underscore the imperative of heightening public awareness and interventions to mitigate waste disposal into water bodies, alongside establishing more effective waste management infrastructures to foster substantial improvements in environmental sustainability and water quality.

Abstract

The advancement of Industry 4.0 has brought the integration of digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), into various industries, including hotel industry. However, awareness of Industry 4.0 technologies in hotel operations remains limited, particularly in sustainable practices. This paper aims to build awareness of Industry 4.0 by implementing IoT-based wastewater measurement systems in the hotel industry in Yogyakarta City. The community engagement involves the design and deployment of an IoT-based system to monitor wastewater quality, providing real-time data to hotel operators. The methods include system integration and pilot testing in selected hotel in Yogyakarta in collaboration with Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI). Results show that the implementation of IoT technology can enhance monitoring accuracy and support the sustainability efforts of hotels by reducing water pollution. The conclusions show the potential of IoT in driving environmental sustainability in the hospitality industry, while also demonstrating the practical application of Industry 4.0 technologies in day-to-day hotel operations. This initiative bridges the gap between modern technological adoption and sustainable practices in the hotel industry.

Abstract

Dekso Tourism Village in Kulon Progo Regency, during its five-year period after establishment, faces difficulties to maintain and develop its tourism busines. Internal problems of the management become an obstacle to the development of the village so that it can compete with other tourism villages and has an economic impact on the community. The tourism village development program is one form of community-based development implementation. The active role of the community itself is very important in the management process. Therefore, this community service program was carried out to help solving the village’s problems through three stages of implementation methods, namely the process of awareness, capacitating, and enrichment. Improved governance was carried out by reorganizing the new management based on established criteria and referring to the collegial collective principle. Reorganization also includes strengthening institutional cooperation with BUMDes as the parent company, POKDARWIS and other organizations involved in the tourism village. In addition, in order to strengthen the tourism village governance, the formation of a village regulation (PerKal) on tourism villages is also part of this service program. This legal umbrella will encourage cooperation between related parties to be more systematic, protect tourism village activities, as well as be the guidelines for future tourism development in Banjararum.

Abstract

Urban communities living in the Mendawai Social Complex, Palangka Raya City are facing various economic challenges, especially income instability due to odd jobs such as construction workers and traditional miners. Community Service (PKM) activities use the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method. Considering the large area of the PKM location, researchers invite active participation from the GKE Panenga Congregation, which also experiences the same economic problems, to find solutions to these problems. The purpose of this PKM activity is to improve community welfare through three main aspects, namely independence, social capital, and life skills. The results of this PKM activity show that participants can find references for independent businesses that have the potential to increase income through life skills training in the culinary field. Participants also obtain solutions in managing business groups so that they can be sustainable through business coordination training provided by practitioners. Then, there is a re-strengthening of the social capital of the participants through solutions to social problems provided during the PKM activity. In addition, another quite prominent result of this PKM activity is that it not only has a positive impact on the participants but also on the Mendawai Social Complex community, namely the existence of a reference for a business model that can be developed independently. At the end of this PKM activity which uses the Community Based Development (CBD) approach and produces effective community empowerment activities, the researcher suggests that both the government and other private parties also use the same approach to the Mendawai Social Complex community, or other urban communities who are trapped in poverty.

Abstract

Oral health is essential for overall human well-being. Everyone, regardless of age—whether young or old—must maintain good dental hygiene, including kindergarten children in rural areas. Unfortunately, knowledge of oral health and tooth-brushing skills among kindergarten students in these regions remains inadequate. To improve their understanding of dental health and proper brushing techniques, effective educational methods are required. In response to this issue, a community service team implemented a multi-method approach targeting two groups: primary and secondary beneficiaries. The primary group consisted of kindergarten students, who were engaged through interactive counseling, demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions, singing, games, rewards, and practical tooth-brushing exercises. Meanwhile, for the secondary group—teachers and parents—the team utilized persuasive communication via WhatsApp messages, providing oral health education and encouraging parents to consistently remind their children to practice proper dental hygiene daily. Based on the program evaluation, the multi-method approach was proven effective in enhancing both the knowledge and skills of kindergarten children in maintaining oral health. Furthermore, it contributed to creating an environment that fosters healthy behavior among children. Therefore, the team believes that dental health practitioners and educators can adopt similar methods to achieve optimal outcomes in promoting oral health awareness.

Abstract

Surface water is the primary source of water for communities but is highly susceptible to contamination that can pose health risks. Telukambulu, a village in Karawang, West Java, faces challenges in household clean water quality. This community service activity aims to evaluate household water quality through the assessment of physical water parameters and screening using water test strips to measure chemical parameters. Analysis reveals that household water is not entirely suitable for daily needs such as drinking and cooking, with chemical parameters like pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels being inconsistent. Community education was conducted to enhance understanding of the importance of water management, coupled with the application of simple filtration technology for water purification. This solution was designed to be easily adopted and sustainable. The program successfully raised community awareness about the importance of clean water quality and provided practical guidelines for improving household water quality. Through this approach, it is expected that the community can manage water more healthily and support better living standards.

Abstract

Infectious diseases such as lameness remain a persistent health problem for small ruminants in community farming systems. Although antimicrobials are frequently used as a treatment strategy, this practice contributes to increased medication use and raises concerns over antimicrobial resistance. This study assessed behavioral practices surrounding antimicrobial use among farmers at Ngudi Dadi, a community farm in Central Java, Indonesia, and implemented a multifaceted intervention combining farmer training and the construction of a biosecurity-focused footbath.Behavioral data were collected through structured survey with 21 farmers, covering five domains: antimicrobial administration, disposal of veterinary medicines, frequency of antimicrobial use, medication storage, and treatment of sick animals. Behavioral scores varied across categories, with consistently higher scores for treatment practices, but notable gaps in antimicrobial administration and disposal behaviors. Importantly, no significant correlation was observed between years of farming experience and behavioral practice scores (Spearman’s ρ = 0.0488, p = 0.8335), suggesting that practice gaps are widespread regardless of farming experience.Post-survey, a training session was conducted, followed by the construction of a footbath using lemongrass essential oil as a natural disinfectant. The footbath is now routinely used for incoming livestock at Ngudi Dadi Farm, serving as a biosecurity measure that supports reduced reliance on antimicrobials. This study represents the first initiative in Indonesia to integrate behavioral assessment, farmer education, and footbath implementation into a comprehensive antimicrobial stewardship strategy. Expansion of this model to other community farming settings, along with the development of standardized operating procedures, may enhance its scalability and long-term impact.
