Abstract

Antibacterial compounds are bioactive substances capable of inhibiting bacterial growth by disrupting the metabolism and cellular processes of pathogenic microorganisms. Natural plant-derived compounds have been widely explored for their antibacterial properties, with star fruit (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) and betel leaf (Piper betle) recognized for their potent antimicrobial effects. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of a combination of star fruit and betel leaf extracts against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, two clinically significant bacterial pathogens. The extraction process was performed using hydro-extraction at different temperatures (40°C, 50°C, 60°C, and 90°C) to determine the optimal conditions for bioactive compound yield. Antibacterial activity was assessed using the disc diffusion method, measuring inhibition zones to indicate bacterial susceptibility. The results demonstrated that the optimal inhibitory effect occurred at 50°C, producing an inhibition zone of 19.75 mm for Staphylococcus aureus and 11.75 mm for Escherichia coli. These findings suggest that temperature plays a critical role in maximizing the antibacterial potential of plant extracts. The study highlights the potential application of star fruit and betel leaf extracts as natural antibacterial agents, particularly against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Further research is recommended to explore the mechanism of action, phytochemical composition, and potential synergy of these extracts in antimicrobial formulations.

Abstract

The Putat leaf (Planchonia valida) is a plant traditionally used by the community in the Tanjung Lanjut area, Jambi, both as a salad ingredient and as a traditional medicine to treat skin diseases and promote health. This identifies that the putat plant contains chemical compounds that potentially have antioxidant activity. In this study, putat leaf samples (Planchonia valida) that potentially have antioxidant activity. In this study, Planchonia valida (P. valida) leaf samples using n-hexane and ethyl acetate solvents through a multistep maceration process. Subsequently, phytochemical screening and antioxidant activity tests were conducted to obtain information about fractions that have the potential to be further isolated. The extraction percentage with a yield value of 1,28% was obtained in the maceration process. Further isolation was carried out using isolate liquid chromatography and FT-IR instruments. The obtained isolate was in the form of a wet solid, and through characterization, it was classified as a steroid compound suspected to be ergosterol. Free radicals or oxidants have reactive effects on the human body and can trigger various types of diseases. Antioxidants are known to have the ability to inhibit or neutralize free radicals in the human body. This study tested antioxidant activity using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-1,1-picrylhydrazyl) method on isolating F1. Isolate F1 was found to have antioxidant activity with a value of 714.637 ppm, falling into the range of weak antioxidant activity

Abstract

Putat leaves (Planchonia valida) are a plant that is traditionally used by people in the Tanjung Lanjut areas, Jambi as fresh vegetables, and as a traditional medicine to treat skin diseases and restore health. This identifies that the putat plant contains chemical compounds that have the potential to have antioxidant activity. Extraction was carried out using n-hexane and ethyl acetate solvents using multistage maceration. Next, phytochemical screening and antioxidant activity tests are carried out to obtain information about fractions that can potentially proceed to the isolation stage. In the maceration process, an extract percentage was obtained with a yield value of 1.39%. Next, isolation was carried out using vacuum liquid chromatography. The isolates obtained were then characterized using UV-Vis and FT-IR spectrophotometer instruments. The isolate obtained was in the form of a wet solid, and if seen through characterization, it belonged to the class of steroid compounds; it was suspected to be an ergosterol compound. Antioxidants are known to have the ability to inhibit and reduce the presence of free radicals in the human body. In this study, antioxidant activity was tested using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrihidazil) method on F1 isolates. The F1 isolate obtained was proven to have antioxidant activity with a value of 99.2265 ppm, which is classified in the strong antioxidant activity range.

Abstract

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has intensified the global search for alternative antimicrobial agents, particularly from natural sources. Traditional medicinal plants have been widely recognized for their therapeutic potential, and Peronema canescens Jack is well-known to contain bioactive compounds. Among its pharmacological properties, its antibacterial potential has drawn scientific interest. Secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, tannins, and phenolics are believed to contribute to its antimicrobial activity. However, the specific antibacterial compounds in P. canescens remain largely unidentified. This study seeks to isolate and characterize antibacterial compounds from the ethanol extract of Sungkai leaves, aiming to discover new natural antibacterial agents. The research objectives include isolating antibacterial compounds using maceration extraction and fractionation, conducting phytochemical screening to identify metabolite classes, assessing antibacterial activity using the paper disc diffusion method, and characterizing bioactive isolates through UV-Vis spectrophotometry and FTIR analysis. The results indicate that the ethyl acetate fraction of the ethanol extract of P. canescens leaves exhibits significant antibacterial activity, particularly at concentrations of 500 and 1000 ppm. UV-Vis spectrophotometric analysis identified flavonoid compounds, including apigenin, flavones, and flavonols, based on characteristic absorption peaks. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups associated with flavonoids, supporting their antibacterial potential. These findings highlight P. canescens as a promising source of natural antibacterial agents. Further studies focusing on compound purification and in vivo antibacterial testing are recommended to explore its pharmaceutical applications.
