Abstract

This research is conducted to find an effective technique to teach speaking of second semester students. To collect the data, this research using pre- and post-test. The treatment is look-up technique in which the learners work in pairs facing each other. One is the reader, the other is the listener. The reader holds the book containing the dialogue at about chest level and slightly to the left. This enables the reader to look at the book and then look at the listener, moving only her eyes and not having to move her head at all. The reader looks at the book and tries to remember as long a phrase as possible. The reader can look at the book for as long as is necessary. Then, when ready, she/he looks at the listener and says the phrase. While she/he speaks, she/he does not look at the book. These rules force the reader to rely on memory. To analyze the data gained from post-test for both control and experimental class, the researcher used the t-test formula. The findings showed that t-value higher than t-critical, 1,671 <5.8> 2,390 which means that Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that it is effective to use look up technique in teaching English speaking, because the research hypothesis (H1) which says “there is a difference in speaking skill between students who were taught using look-up technique and those who were taught using conventional technique (role-play) in their speaking class” was accepted.

Abstract

The main objectives of the study to improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts and know the strengths and weaknesses of the implementation of collaborative writing technique in improving students’ writing ability of descriptive texts. The Classroom Action Research was employed in this study. The subject of the study was 28 of eighth grade students of the SMP Negeri 1 Pelaihari in the Academic Year of 2011/2012. This action research was conducted in two cycles. Each consisted of planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting the action. In collecting the data, the data are obtained from the questionnaire, interview, and observation and also from the writing tests. The result of this study shows that collaborative writing technique can improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts. This is proved by the significant increase of the mean score of the post-test cycle 1 and post-test cycle 2. Besides, the students have become more motivated to study English especially in writing.

Abstract

The study of elderly found that almost all cognitive functions decline with age. Results of previous studies have shown that cognitive training related to everyday life (reading aloud and learning vocabularies and wisdom), namely learning intervention or therapy, can improve two cognitive function (executive functions and processing speed) in elderly people. This study investigates the positive effects of learning foreign language on cognitive functions of an elderly person. This study provides sufficient evidence of learning foreign language effectiveness in a healthy elderly.  Method used is  one single case subject design. A healthy elderly was asked to read aloud and memorize several Quran chapters and verses and write Arabic verbs proposition and several nouns found it the memorized verses and put it into correct sentences. The written words are concerning daily life activity. Since the Qur’an has best structure of Arab sentence, memorizing it help to understand the Arabic sentences properly. The finding support the previous research that the elderly able to improve their cognitive processes and ability through studying foreign language.

Abstract

Based on the researcher’s experience in teaching English at MTsN Mojokerto, there are three problems dealing with the teaching of listening especially for the third year students: 1) most of the students’ scores on listening test are still under the minimum passing criterion (KKM), which is 60; 2 most students are not very enthusiastic in listening activities; 3) it is difficult for students to understand native speech in a tape recorder. Based on the problems, the main purpose of the study is to improve the ninth grade students’ listening skill using Fun Activity in the form of Games at MTsN Mojokerto. The design of this study was Classroom Action Research. The instruments were the listening tests, observation checklist and questionnaires. With the implementation of the games, the criteria of success were successfully achieved in Cycle 2. 74% of the total number of the students could get the scores more than 60 and 90% have positive responses on the implementation of games.

Abstract

The method applied in this research was a classroom action research. After three cycles consisting of two meetings each were conducted, the appropriate model of NHT technique in teaching reading encompassed the following steps: (1) leading students to the topic by giving some questions and/or showing a picture(s), (2) connecting the topic with the students’ real experience, (3) introducing the topic and explaining the instructional objectives, (4) assigning students to predict the words used in the text, (5) informing students about the things they should do in their groups, (6) reading the text clearly, loudly, and slowly and asking some students to re-read the text, (7) clarifying the difficult words and discussing the words the students have predicted, (8) asking students to predict the content, (9) giving individual task to the students, (10) assigning students to put their heads together and discuss the answer they have done individually, (11) checking the groups’ answers, and (12) asking students to conclude the lesson. The finding showed that NHT technique was successful in improving students’ reading comprehension. The improvement could be seen from the increase of students’ average reading scores. Besides, the finding also showed that NHT technique was effective in enhancing the students’ participation, especially in raising their hands competitively to answer the questions during the answer-checking session.
