Abstract

This study employs semiotic analysis to examine the verbal and visual signs within the "Flip the Script" video campaign and explore their interplay in conveying the campaign's intended message. Additionally, the research categorizes the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) depicted in the campaign, drawing from Chandler's (2007) and Leech's (1981) theories The findings highlight the presence of connotative meanings that significantly enhance communication strategies. Through linguistic and visual exploration, the study analyzes how signs and metaphor-driven words resonate deeply with viewers. The process of categorizing SDGs bolsters the campaign's mission of advancing sustainable development, harnessing semiotics to foster nuanced comprehension and forge meaningful connections. The findings of the study shed light on how the campaign video effectively confronts stereotypes and disrupts ingrained societal biases by presenting diverse narratives. This contribution ignites inclusive dialogues and steers positive transformation, enhancing the understanding of the campaign's impact on societal perceptions and behaviors.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explicate and describe the verb malihat, which is synonymous with the verb 'to see' in the English language. The qualitative method was used to explain the explication of verbs ‘to see' in the Banjarese Language. The primary data were obtained from interviews with Banjarese native speakers. The secondary data were from written sources to assess the validity of the data. The data was analyzed using the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) theory by Anna Wierzbicka. The results of the study found nine types of the verb malihat in the Banjarese language. There are meitihi, tebincalak, menjanaki, meawasi, manonton, maintip, mailangi, mancilingi or mancelengi, and manyirit. Furthermore, those verbs are polysemous into four categories: seeing and feeling, seeing and knowing, seeing and saying, and seeing and doing something.

Abstract

This research is a phonological study that focuses on changes in the phoneme /f/ and /v/ in the use of English by hawkers around Mandalika Circuit, Lombok. This study aims to classify the forms and factors of phoneme changes /f/ and /v/ in the use of English by hawkers around Mandalika Circuit. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data is the utterances containing phonemes /f/ and /v/ from 25 hawkers. The intralingual identity method is used to analyze the form of phoneme change, and Weinreich’s theory (1979) is used to analyze the factors of phoneme change. The result shows that the phonemes /f/ and /v/ changed because the Sasak language did not have the phonemes /f/ and /v/, so there was a process of simplifying English into the Sasak language and creating local English variation. The local English variation is created due to the bilingualism of hawkers, low loyalty to English, and getting into a habit of Sasak language.

Abstract

The development of journalism is not only related to the media changing from paper to digital. However, the high demand for online news production and the speed of publication also influence the changes in online news headlines. This research discusses the changes in online news headlines in 2013 and 2023. This study employed qualitative-quantitative methodology. The uninvolved conversation observation technique was applied in collecting the data, while the distributional and identity methods were used to analyze the data. The data source was obtained from Detik.com during the first weeks of 2013 and 2023. The theory used was Van Dijk's critical discourse theory. The results demonstrated that the changes in news headlines in 2013 and 2023 included differences in the number of words, type of sentence, syntactic patterns, use of affixations, use of prepositions, use of punctuation, negation, mention of names, presence of interjections, presence of slang words, and use of onomatopoeic.

Abstract

Indonesian language has several functions. One of the functions of Indonesian language is as a symbol of national identity. The function as a symbol of this national identity is closely related to the statement "language is the mirror of the nation". From this statement, it is known that the nation's mindset can be understood through the language used. That is, the language used affects the way of thinking of the community. In addition, the language used also affects the way people see and understand the surrounding environment. In connection with this, this article simply reviewed one construction in Indonesian language, namely passive construction. This passive construction is considered important to be discussed (although simply) because it is not highlighted by the actors or agents of an action.

Abstract

Music concert posters serve as vital visual representations of youth culture, capturing their creative essence. This study examines three 2023 Bali concert posters, analysing verbal and visual signs. Using Saussure's framework from Chandler (2007), verbal and nonverbal signs are explored, while Barthes (1977) was used to delve into denotative and connotative meanings. Cerrato's (2012) color theory adds depth through color analysis. The analysis reveals prevalent verbal signs, but profound meanings lie in visual cues, suggesting modern youth's preference for visually engaging content. Interestingly, these posters also integrate indigenous elements and local characteristics, melding youthful expression with cultural context by adding cultural figures and authentic colours reflected the message conveyed on the posters.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the fact that Modern Balinese is a continuation of Ancient Balinese. Theoretically, various things in language change are very possible, both microlinguistically and macrolinguistically. This research concerns microlinguistic aspects, especially changes in lexical form and meaning. The aim of this research is to describe changes in the lexical form of Old Balinese in Modern Balinese. The theory used is structural theory. This research is descriptive qualitative in nature. To describe data and analysis, there are three stages of the method used, namely providing data, analyzing data, and presenting analysis results. The data collected is classified based on linguistic characteristics and then described and compared with the initial form and the derived form. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive analytical methods and matching methods. Presentation of results is carried out using formal-informal methods. The results of the analysis show that lexical changes from Old Balinese to Modern Balinese can occur phonologically in both form and meaning. The form of change is in the form of complete lexical changes and some are partial changes.

Abstract

This article discusses the morphophonemic aspects of reduplication in the Dawan language. The focus on morphophonemic studies is based on the fact that reduplication is a word formation process involving repetition, making exploring the intersection and phonological roles in this process interesting. Data were obtained through observation and interviews. Based on the collected data, it is evident that reduplication can occur with verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. For example, the noun neno, meaning 'day' has two forms of reduplication neno-neno, which functions as a noun, and "nen-neno," which serves as an adverb. The data also indicate that reduplication in the Dawan language consists of full and partial reduplication. Among these, partial reduplication is the most productive, while full reduplication is often used to emphasize objects or topics, suggesting a pragmatic aspect in full repetition. Common phonological processes found include sound elision and metathesis.
