Abstract

This article attempts to explore and trace the history of the Qur'an especially regarding the transmission of the Qur'an in the perspective of insider (Muslim) and outsider (orientalist). Both of these perspectives need to be studied deeply and proportionally in order to the horizon of the study of the Qur'an continue to be dynamic and progressive, although sometimes the study conducted by the outsider is not in line with the views of Muslim scholars. It can be seen from the thesis proposed by A. Jeffery and John Wansbrough. From the results of the study it could be concluded that both A. Jeffery and John Wansbrough read the Qur'an by the same method applied to the bible (bible criticism), such as historical criticism, source criticism, form criticism and textual criticism, this kind of perspective would have implications against the text of the Qur'an as plain text. Both A. Jeffery and John Wansbrough argued that they were not convinced of the existence of the Qur'anic set on the basis of the absence of the Prophet's attempt to gather until he died. While other orientalists like Angelika Neuwirth had a different perspective regarding the writing and codification of the Qur'an. She argued that since the time of the Prophet already contained the writing of the Qur'an. The differences of view among the orientalists became a proof that the study of the Qur’an among outsiders was not always negative and polemic.

Abstract

This paper will compare the commentaries of the verses which tell about women's dressing, where the explanation focuses on four Indonesian quranic commentaries made at different times; the classical dan medieval period. The four books are Turjuman al-Mustafid Interpretation, Qur'anul Karim Interpretation, Al-Nur Interpretation, and Al-Misbah Interpretation. This study is a qualitative research in which the data taken in this study are derived from some literatures or books. The results of the study reveal that the differences of commentaries are; Turjuman al-Mustafid regulated women to cover their whole body except face and palms, Quranul Karim required women not to be look like wanton women,  Al-Nur told women to cover up their body and to wear a scarf on the head, while Al Misbah asked women to dress in a respectable manner (though not wearing jilbab). These differences are caused by the differences in the time of writing, the background of the life of commentators and the books used as references in commenting the verse.

Abstract

The difference in the Qur’an interpretation is a big task to be wisely responded, because there are many conflicts, even violence that occurs due to differences and immature attitudes and unwise authority, whereas “a difference does not necessarily end in dispute, and a dispute does not necessarily end in violence.” Therefore, this article tries to analyze and overcome the difference in the Qur’an  interpretation. Various factors then become the cause, such as the subjectivity of the interpreter that can not be left behind when reviewing the Qur'an, methods and approaches which are more numerous and different, even the difference of interpretation that can occur caused by the Qur'an itself, for example, it is not clear whether a verse is Muhkam or Mutasyabih, whether a word is special or general, and so forth. Therefore, the difference in interpretation is natural and it becomes a phenomenon commonly found. So that “I may be right, while the other opinion is wrong. On the contrary, it could be my opinion is wrong, and the other opinion is true” is the principle of humility which should take precedence when there is a difference in interpretation, and every result of interpretation should always be ended with a speech Wa Allahu A’lam bi ash-Shawab (God knows most correct).

Abstract

Creating comic of hadith is a new trend of Hadith studies in Indonesia. One of the important works is Kritis atas 99 Pesan Nabi: Komik Hadis Bukhari-Muslim (a critical of 99 Prophet Messages: Bukhari-Moslems Hadith Comic) by vbi_djenggotten or Veby Surya Wibawa. As a work, it seems interesting to be critically analyzed to reinforce the position of the work among other syarah of hadiths, at least including the description of the work, the typology of understanding and the content. To get a comprehensive description, this article uses a normative approach, content analysis and purely library research (library research). As a result, it is found that descriptively, this comic even from the very beginning is only to explore hadiths with the choices contained in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī by al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim by Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj, but there are some hadiths which come from outside these legitimate works coming from Musnad Aḥmad by Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and Sunan Abī Dāwūd by Abū Dāwūd. In addition, by taking samples of two hadiths entitled “Istri Ideal “ (Ideal Wife), typologically, it appears to be in the category of textual hadith syarah. Moreover, in content, the illustration about women contained cannot be denied that can create a variety of criticism, especially when it is viewed from a feminist perspective, because it impresses gender biased.

Abstract

This study aims to know hadith critical method by west scholars towards hadiths in the Al-Qur’an interpretation book. This article discusses about the main idea of Herbert Berg in Hadith Studies. As the orientalist, he conducts a research of Hadith Authenticity found in the interpretation book. It makes him different from common orientalist that conduct research in Law Hadiths critical. He started his project by criticizing the book of Tafsir Jami’ al-Bayan fi Tafsir al-Qur’an by At-Tabari and the hadiths collected by Ibnu Abbas. Berg declared himself as middle ground. This category had an objective perspective as a hadith researcher compared to skeptic and sanguine groups. He used a comprehensive standard in examining the text of hadith based on five principles: Haggadic, Halakhic, Masoretic, Rhetorical, Allegoric. Those five principles created twelve methodology frameworks borrowed from the Wansbrough analysis tool and added  by the theory of Simple Gloss, Quranic Loci and Non Exegetical. The aim is to test the consistency of hadith in the historical line. He tested through sanad and matan of hadith and his theory description is summarized from his book "The Development of Exegesis in Early Islam: The Debate over the Authenticity of the Muslim Literature of the Formative Period.
