Abstract

This article discusses a long journey of ‘ilmi interpretation in Indonesia since the era of 1960s until now. The author concerns at how the interpretation with this style is transformed along with the rapid development of science and technology. Although the debate over the status of ‘ilmi interpretation is never end, at least the scholars are divided into three groups: the advocates, the rejectionists, and the moderates, but this interpretation continues to emerge in different parts of Muslim countries, including Indonesia. Since the 1960s, the ‘ilmi interpretation embryo had appeared in several works of Nusantara’s Mufassir. This embryo then developed in the era of the 1990s with the outbreak of books that explained the relation of al-Qur’an and science. This stage was growing again in the year 2010s in the form of intact interpretation work. This study shows that the dynamics of ‘ilmi interpretation journey in Indonesia are very dynamic.

Abstract

The distinction of Khaled Abou El Fadl, the moderate-puritan is actually only one of the distinction models of Islam. Other distinctions include “liberal-conservative” from Ann Elizabeth or the “Islamic and Islamic fundamentalism” from Bassam Tibi. The emergence of these distinctions is related to differences in understanding the interaction with non-Muslims and the concept of salvation in the context of religious plurality. It is hard to imagine that they both read and interpret the same source (the Qur’an) but in terms of the output interpretation, these two groups are very diametrical and incompatible. This raises a question of what their premises and logic are in order to make a difference in describing the will of God. If the difference is only on the level of discourse, it might not be too worrisome. The problem is the difference in the interpretation implied on the rise of violence in the name of religion. So aside from causing negative image on Islam as a violent and intolerant religion, as well as the word “Islam” has generated negative sentiments in various countries, starting from a nonchalant attitude that has a lot of suspicion to fear and hatred. El Fadl realizes that the Islamic world can not be reduced in these two categories only. The reality of modern Islam is much more complex and there is another orientation of thought. But at least this distinction can illustrate the existence of schism in Islamic thought between moderate Islam and puritan Islam lately.

Abstract

Riffat Hasan is one of the Muslim feminists who againsts the strong patriarchal culture in her environment. Riffat Hasan’s idea of equality is a breath of fresh air for women who have been embraced by a growing patriarchal culture. As a Muslim feminist, Riffat hasan uses gender as an analysis to dismantle the construction of patriarchal culture covered with religious message, especially the hadith. The development of religious patriarchism is the result of interpretation of religious teachings that have the impression of misogynistic. Misogynistic interpretation model is one of the relationships that show the interaction of patriarchal culture with religion. The relationship forms a mutually supportive argument between religious teachings and patriarchal culture. So, both regions are understood as one unity. But as a critical effort on the development of religious patriarchism, Riffat Hasan’s idea of gender can be used as a medium for finding ideological constructs, and the use of epistemology in the understanding of religious teachings. Thus, the relationship of religion and patriarchal culture is no longer seen as a unity that must be obeyed thoroughly.

Abstract

Hadith study and hadith science which develop in Indonesia today are inseparable from important figures. Among them is Mahmud Yunus. This article is historically-philosophical which will examine the thoughts and contributions of Mahmud Yunus in the historical development of Hadith study and hadith science in Indonesia. This research uses library research method and historical-philosophical approach in which it is obtained some conclusions; Mahmud Yunus did not have any special thoughts about the hadith or hadith science, he composed a book or hadith book as a teaching material in a madrasah or school with a very simple model. Likewise in the field of ulum al-hadis, he only explains the basics briefly by quoting from earlier scholars’ books without discussing in more depth as it is in the Musthalah al-Hadith Science. Mahmud is more concerned with methods of teaching than the material.
