Abstract

Technology of the marine sciences, especially the potential  resources of fish can be evalute from front area identification. The aim of this research is to identify front salinity area based on seasonal variation in the west coastal of Sumatra. The method involved modeling by ODV  (Ocean Data View), Fortran, Transform, and Matlab software. We used salinity data what obtained from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). The result showed that vertically, front areas in coastal West of Sumatera for all off season was in depth of ± 41.6 meters, 83.2 meters and 124.8 meters. In the North West Monsoon, salinity front area was around of the Nias, Simeulue, Northwest and southeast  of Enggano islands. On the first of transition period was in West of Simeulue, southeast of Nias, and East Enggano Islands. In the South East Monsoon was in the Northeast of Simeulue, the East of Mentawai, Southeast and Northwest of Enggano Islands. On the second transition period was in the Eastern of Nias and Mentawai Islands. Salinity changes of fourth monsoons on this front area is ± 0,5 psu.

Abstract

Frog’s group of Hylarana nicobariensis (Stoliczka, 1870) is a complex species that has diverse genetic populations and variations on advertisement calls. Variations on advertisement calls among populations have been reported in Sumatra, Java and Bali. The population of frog in Enggano has different phenomenon that was not found in Sumatra and Java.  Enggano population was genetically identical, but the advertisement calls were very diverse. There were four types of advertisement calls on the population in Enggano Island, namely: (1) advertisement call type 1 which has pulse wave with the dominant frequency of 2855.13 ± 135.22 Hertz; (2) advertisement call type 2 which has pure tone wave with the dominant frequency of 2720.29 ± 97.69 Hertz; (3) advertisement call type 3 which has pulse wave with dominant frequency 2634.61 ± 292.81 Hertz; (4) advertisement call type 4 which has pure tone wave with dominant frequency 1618.79 ± 83.05 Hertz. The degradation of the dominant frequency and the lower frequency was likely due to the increase of snout to vent length (SVL) of adult male that were followed by increasing the size of the head.

Abstract

Naturally occurring yeasts (wild type) are important genetic resources for many industrial interests. Though biodiversity exploration of Enggano has been done since 1944, but there is no report for yeast diversity from this island. Due to its industrial interest, xylose fermenting yeast is target for many scientists. This present study aims to isolate xylose assimilating yeast from island of Enggano. The samples were collected from varying sources included soil, leaf litter, decay wood, fruit and sediment. Xylose enrichment culture technique was performed to enrich xylose fermenting yeast. While for the isolation of yeast several methods which include dilution, ballistopore falling, direct isolation, membrane filtration were done. Of 200 isolates, 76 strains (38 %) were xylose assimilating yeast which mostly belong to Candida which include C. insectorum, C. tropicalis, C. boidinii, C. pseudolambica, C. yuanshanica, C. silvae, Cyberlindnera saturnus, Williopsis saturnus and Sporobolomyces poonsookiae. One strain Candida sp. that was isolated from soil could be assigned as a candidate of novel species on base on its morphological and biochemical characteristics along with analyses of gene sequence from D1/D2 domain. This study confirms that yeast survey is very important to obtain new genetic resources for industrial interest as well as for taxonomic study.

Abstract

A study on diversity of arbuscular fungi (AF) in forest area and small plantation in eastern part of Enggano island was done. Twelve species of AF were identified from this island. Eleven species had been reported from Java and associated with different kinds of plant, but three species i.e.  Gigaspora gigantea, Glomus multicaule and Scutellospora heterogama were not common, while Sclerocystis taiwanensis is a new record for Indonesia. All species of AF recorded from this island were described by their morphological characters and their  distribution in Enggano island were presented.
