Abstract

The use of alternative feed for Sunda pangolin in captivity is one way to cope with a shortage of feed. The aims of the research was to determine the impact of the use of alternative feed toward feed consumption and daily weight gain of pangolin in captivity. The research was conducted at Research Forest Dramaga, Bogor. The research material used by 4 individual pangolin consists of 2 males and 2 females with an average weight of 4.28 ± 0.22 kg. Research using 4x4 Latin Square Design, with 7 days of preliminary period and 14 days of data collection. The treatment applied were 4 alternative feeding i.e A= 50% kroto + 50% egg; B= 50% kroto + 50% tofu; C= 50% kroto + 20% egg + 30% tofu; D= 50% kroto + 18% egg + 26% tofu + 6% termites. The results showed that the effect of alternative feed not significantly (P<0.05) on feed consumption and body weight gain pangolin. Pangolin with treatment C consumed feed based on dry matter as much as 63.08 grams per day or 10.46% from body weight and the biggest weight gain 35.0 grams per individual per day.

Abstract

Ecological study with special attention to vegetation analysis has been done in the Bintan forest area, Riau Archipelago. Based on three sampling plots of 30 × 30 m, there were 73 tree (dbh ? 5 cm) species were recorded, belong to 64 genera and 32 families. The density is fairly high (1,485 individuals /ha) with total basal area relatively low (27.71 m2/ha).  Its indicates that most of trees are small size. Similarity index among study sites are relatively low (< 25 %), indicates that there is strong relation between habitat and species composition. Out of the 6 most common tree species in the study area, only Dipterocarpus gracillis was dominant in 2 study sites. Overall species diversity is relatively low, which is characteristic of forest vegetation on small islands.

Abstract

Liangpran Mountain is located within the Heart of Borneo (HoB) Conservation Area which has high biodiversity. The exploration of orchids has been carried out in several locations in the HoB region and recorded a high diversity of wild orchid. This research was conducted to explore and inventory the orchids from the foothill of Mount Liangpran, and record  the diversity and abundance of epiphytic orchids in the study sites. This research was carried out by making track of exploration along the Nuyung river estuary to the Tebing Lapah. The richness and abundance data were collected in three plot of 1000 x 20 m. The host tree characteristics and distribution of epiphytic orchid on the host tree were recorded. Fourteen species orchids were collected, and the most dominant are Coelogyne asperata and Agrostophyllum stipulatum with an abundance of 23.53% each. The epiphytic orchids in host trees are spread from the zone II to V based on the Johansson’s sections, in which zone IV is the most diverse. Nine species of the host trees associated with the collected orchids were identified and grouped into five families. The characters of host trees are 7–57 m height,12–112 cm diameters, and 2 types of bark surfaces (rough and intermediate).

Abstract

In Indonesia, soybeans are typically cultivated during the dry season, thus making it prone to drought stress in the reproductive stage. The objective of the research was to characterize the agronomic characters of several soybean genotypes which were tolerant to drought at the reproductive stage. A total of 19 soybean genotypes were evaluated for its agronomic characters and tolerance to drought stress in Probolinggo (East Java, Indonesia) during the dry season (June – September). The research was arranged in a randomized block design with four replicates. Soybean cultivars were sown at two separate experiments, normal/optimal (plants were irrigated during the growth period) and stress (plants were irrigated up to 40 days after planting) conditions. Drought stress during the reproductive stage did not affect the characters of plant height, the number of branches per plant, the number of nodes per plant, and the number of pods per plant. Meanwhile, the number of empty pod, seed weight per plant, and seed yield were significantly affected. There were two genotypes which were identified as the tolerant genotypes to drought stress at the reproductive stage, i.e. MDT15-6-11 and MDT15-W-3034. The agronomic characters of MDT15-6-11 were showed as having a low percentage of yield reduction, hence it was able to mantain its high yield. The MDT15-W-3034 was identified as drought-tolerant due to the slow wilting, high plant character, a slow vegetative phase, and high yields. The genotypes obtained from this study could be recommended to be released as new soybean drought-tolerant varieties due to its high yield and tolerant to drought stress. Those genotypes could also be used as gene donors for soybean improvement to drought stress at the reproductive stage.

Abstract

A gillnet is a common fishing gear for exploitation and fish capture at Jatiluhur Reservoir. The fish size captured by the gillnet depends on the mesh size for its selective fishing gear. Determination of gillnet mesh size is one of effort for fisheries management.  The management of nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is based on gillnet selectivity and reproductive biology of nile tilapia. The aim of the research was to estimate length at the first mature (Lm) and gillnet selectivity for nile tilapia. The research was conducted at February-September 2017 through experimental fishing using gillnet with 1.0–4.0 mesh size (interval 0.5 inch). The gillnet installation was performed at six stations, namely Cihuni-Cibadak, Sungai Cikanyayan, Sungai Ciririp, Sungai Cihonje, Pasir Kole and Cilalawi. The Lm of nile tilapia was 18.3 and 23.3 cm for female and male, respectively. The total length retained in the gillnet with the highest probability for mesh size 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5; 3.0; 3.5 and 4.0 inches were 9.5; 12.5; 14.5; 18.5; 20.5; 26.5 and 30.5 cm, respectively. The minimum mesh size used for nile tilapia exploitation was ≥3 inches because it was able to catch nile tilapia with the total length larger than Lm (Lc>Lm) and with an SPR value of > 40% so that the tilapia resource in the Jatiluhur Reservoir remains sustainable.

Abstract

The bacterial populations in the farming of spiny lobster could have either beneficial or harmful effects depending on the prevailing conditions. We designed this study to identify and to perform a pathogenicity test of some bacteria isolated from wild and farmed spiny lobsters Panulirus homarus. The adult farmed lobsters were obtained from Pangandaran and Lombok coastal areas, while the wild lobsters were collected from Lombok, with five lobsters for each location. The bacteria were isolated from the midgut, gill, hepatopancreas, and muscle tissues of the lobsters. The identification of the bacteria was carried out by molecular methods. Pathogenicity test was performed by intramuscular injection of 0.1 ml bacterial suspensions at the density of 7×106cfu/ml into each three adult apparently healthy lobsters for every eight bacterial isolates. Our study identified six bacterial isolates that exhibited high homology of a nucleotide sequence with Shewanella algae, Bacillus firmus, Vibrio alginolyticus, Tenacibaculum lutimaris, Pseudomonas sp. and Vibrio sp., while two isolates were reminded unidentified due to low nucleotide similarities (< 97%). The pathogenicity test showed that there was no mortality of lobsters injected with those bacterial isolates. This may because the dose of injection was too low to induce bacterial infection particularly for Vibrio, or the bacteria were not pathogenic for lobster or even have the potency as probiotic bacteria.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to isolate microorganism that can produce growth hormone, fix atmospheric nitrogen, and solubilize inorganic phosphate that may be used for enhancing the growth of banana in marginal land.  A total of 25 bacteria associated with banana that belonged to six genera were isolated from namely Acinetobacter, Enterobacter, Pantoea, Klebsiella, Rhizobium, and Cupriavidus genera. Gammaproteobacteria is the dominant class, followed by Betaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria. All isolates were screened for multiple plant growth promoting traits which may play a role in banana growth, namely fixing nitrogen, solubilizing phosphate, and producing Indole Acetic Acid (IAA). Twenty-two isolates were capable to fix nitrogen, 21 isolates can solubilize insoluble phosphate, and 15 isolates produced IAA dependent of L-Tryptophan presence. Despite most of the bacteria isolates exhibited one plant growth-promoting activities, Enterobacter and Klebsiella genera showed three of plant growth promoting bacteria traits.

Abstract

Beauveria bassiana produces several metabolites that are toxic to insects so that it can be used as a biological insect control agent as an alternative to synthetic pesticides. The aim of this study was to determine the larvicidal activity of ethyl acetate and hexane extract from B. bassiana filtrate culture against Aedes aegypti 2nd instar larvae. This research was it cooked by determining the optimum age of spore inoculum of B. bassiana on the Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) based on the number of spores and its viability. Afterwards, we determine the incubation time of B. bassiana in the Potato Dextrose Broth (PDB) in order to obtain filtrate culture which have highest mortality effects against Ae. aegypti 2nd instar larvae. B. bassiana filtrate culture was extracted with hexane and ethyl acetate and tested aegypti for larvicidal activity with a concentration range of 50, 100, 200, 300 ppm. The LC50 value was carried out by probit analysis. The results showed that ninth day old culture in the PDA was the optimum age of spore inoculum with the spore number and viability were 2.54 x 107 spore/mL and 93.46% respectively. The filtrate of sixth day old culture in PDB medium gave 100% mortality against 2nd instar Ae. Aegypti larvae. LC50 values of ethyl acetate and hexane extract were 117.28 dan 287.09 ppm. These results showed that the ethyl acetate and hexane extract of B. bassiana filtrate culture have biopesticide potential against 2nd instar Ae. aegypti larvae.
