Abstract

S. WIRJOATMODJO & ANITA HANNA ATMOWIDJOJO. 1985. Insect community of stream ecosystem of Ketambe forest, Gunung Leuser National Park, Aceh, Berita Biologi 3.(3) : 111 -115.Non-strictly seasonal study on the insect community of stream ecosystem at Ketambe forest, Gunung Leuser National Park,Aceh was undertaken from September 1980 to February 1983,with the aim of providing base line data of the local stream ecosystem. Thirty two species of benthic insects were recorded from the depth between 5--30 cm.They belong to the orders of Diptera, Odonata, Kphemeroptera, Coleoptera, Plecoptera, Hemiptera, Megaloptera and Trichoptera. The number of species found was higher during the beginning of the dry than that of the rainy season (96,9% vs 59,4% of the total). Diptera and Odonata showed the highest number of species (8) among the orders, whereas Trichoptera was the lowest (one species). However, in term of frequency of occurence and abundance, the Trichoptera species, Hydropsyche sp,, was the highest, followed by Neoperla sp. (Flecoptera). There was a tendency of seasonal fluctuation in species number and life cycle in several species. Bottom structures containing pebbles, boulders of various sizes and leaf litter for shelter and feeding site, appeared to be the best habitat. Species composition or number varied with stations. However, diversity indexes among stations were more or less similar, and all of them were low.

Abstract

N. WULIJARNI - SOETJIPTO, 1985. Effect of desiccation and storage temperature on the viability of seeds of Citrus amblycarpa. Berita Biologi 3 (3): 95- 100. Seeds of Citrus amblycarpa (Hassk.) Ochse were dried using several methods. The seeds remained fully viable when the moisture content were reduced to around 5%. Upon storage, those seeds stored at 28°, 10° and 4°C were still viable after 287 days. Further observation showed that storage at 10°, 4° and - 10°C enabled seeds to maintain their germination until the end of the experiment, i.e. 910 days. Therefore, it is concluded that C.amblycarpa seeds tend to follow the behaviour of the orthodox seeds.

Abstract

DAISY WOWOR. 1985. Population structure and spawning period of Udang Regang (Macrobrachium sintangense). BeritaBiologi 3(3): 116- 120. Population structure and spawning period of Macrobrachium sintangense was observed in a coast of a small artificial lake, Situ Ciletuh, Ci gombong, West Java, from December 1981 to August 1982. Examination of the class-size frequency indicated the growth rate of body length of the population, and its spawning periods. The mean growth rate of carapace was 3.44 mm per month.Sex ratio was 1:1, significant at the 95% level. The number of the larger males is greater than the females, which indicate the phenomenon of sexual dimorphism. This is due to the differences of growth and the maximum body size attained by the males and females. It was observed that M. sintangense spawns throughout the year, maximum spawning activity occurs between March and June.

Abstract

G. PANGGABEAN & A. TRI SUNARTO. 1985.The effect of fruit maturity of sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) and lime (C. aurantifolia (Christm.) Swing, on vitamin C content. Berita Biologi 3(3):101 - 103. - The effect of fruit maturity on vitamin content were studied on sour orange (C. aurantium) and lime (C. aurantifolia}.In sour orange, vitamin C content of 13-16 weeks were 24-25 mg/100 ml. However, the content of vitamin C decreased according to the maturity of the fruits which at the stage of 26 weeks reached 11.68 mg/100 ml.The vitamin C of lime at the age of 16 - 19 weeks were 8.50 - 9.14, mg/100 ml. The fruits of 25 weeks old contained 26.50 mg/100 ml of the vitamin C. The fruits became over ripe and rotted after 25 weeks.
