Abstract

NANDA UTAMI. 1986.Pollination in Metroxylon sagu. Berita biologi 3(5): 229 - 231. Inflorescence morphology, flowering biology and insect visitors of sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) were observed in Pandeglang, West Java.Sago palm is monoceous plant and self pollinated. However, insect visitors appear to play an important role for fruit setting. It was showed that the number of fruits setting in isolated inflorescence was smaller than in unisolated inflorescence. Some insect visitors recorded were Apis indica, Trigona iridipennis Ryghium haemorrhoidale.and Drosophylla melanogaster

Abstract

H. SUTARNO & N.W. UTAMI. 1986.Influence of maturity on respiration rate and chemical constituents of avocado fruits during ripening period.Berita Biologi 3(5) : 209 - 213. Changes of respiration rate and chemical constituents of avocado fruits as affected by various maturity (18 - 24 weeks from blooming) were observed during incuUbation peiiod at 28 ±1 C.Results of these experiments were intended to know the best time for harvesting based on their cell vitality and chemical constituents. Those indicated that 20 weeks from blooming was the best time for obtaining higher oil content (12.48%) and carotenoid content (968.6l.U.) of ripening fruits. The relationship between respiration rate and changes of oil content and carotenoid content were discussed.

Abstract

EDIMIRMANTO.1986, The habitat of primates at the Ketambe Research Station, G. Leuseur National Park, Aceh. Berita Biologi 3(5): 232-239.A phytosociological analysis of the habitat of primates in Ketambe area, was conducted, using point-centered quarter method.Three groups of samples in ordination of Bray & Curtis were recognized. The groups are represent three community types, i.e. Aglaia-Paranephelium community, Dysoxylum-Aglaia community and Shorea Parashorea community. These three community types are useful for their survival of primates, as source of food as well as transportation support.

Abstract

SAEFUDIN & R. SANTOSA.1986.The effect of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium fertilizers on the growth of Ipomoea aquatica Forst. Berita Biologi 3 (5): 214-218.Experiments to study the effect of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium fertilizers on the growth of Ipomoea aquatica, a leafy vegetable, were carried out on four sites, i.e. in the villages of Teluk, Karangklesem, Purwokerto Kulon and Sumampir of the district of Banyumas respectively. The rates of application used were 0, 125, 250 and 375 kg of urea, triple superphosphate or potassium chloride per ha. The nitrogen fertilizer increased significantly the growth of Ipomoea aquatica with optimum rate 250 kg of urea per ha. Potassium chloride increased slightly the stem elongation, but not the vegetable yield, while the phosphorous fertilizer did not show any significant effect.Among sites, the highest yield was obtained from the plot in the village of Teluk, followed by Karangklesem, Purwokerto Kulon and Sumampir in decreasing order.

Abstract

E. PURWANINGSIH & I. BUDIARTI. 1986. Rearing Stomoxys calcitrans (Diptera : Muscidae) in the laboratory. Berita Biologi 3(5): 240 - 243. The stable fly 5. calcitrans was reared in the laboratory in an attempt to the study the biology. Flies captured from the field were used as parent stock. Eggs were laid within 4 days after captured. The total number of eggs deposited were 48 (15-96) with an incubation period of 1,6 (1-3) days. The larval and pupal period were 4,9 (8-23) days and 6,4 (1-3) days respectively. Hatching of eggs reach 26,1 (21,4-31,1) %. Adult emergence reach 86 %. Feeding activities was recorded for the adult as well as larvae. Flies could survive for 2-32 days in the laboratory without any sign of being able to produce offspring. Behaviour and the morphology of each development stage were discussed.

Abstract

T. PARTOMIHARDJO.1986. Distribution and ecology of mlinjo (Gnetum gnemon L.)in Krakatau.Berita Biologi 3 (5): 219-224.A study on distribution and ecology of mlinjo in Krakatau was conducted during two months. Two plots were placed at different sites on the mlinjo population. According to the reconnaissance throughout the area, indicated that mlinjo has grown well in the lower area under 50 m above sea level. All the seed lings of mlinjo within 400 sq.m around the adult tree were mapped showing that the distribution was clumped and that are fewer seedlings within further way than under a flowering/fruiting adult. There was no male individu of mlinjo recorded in the Krakatau Islands.

Abstract

T. DJARWANINGSIH. 1986. The genus Capsicum L. (Solanaceae) in Indonesia. Berita Biologi 3(5) : 225 - 228. Most of the twelve recognized species of the Central and South American genus Capsicum L. (cabai, lombok) are known to be widely distributed from lowland to mountains. The recent introduction of new Capsicum species into Indonesia has opened an opportunity to confirm the identity and to compile a list of the species occuring in this country. Therefore the diagnostic value of flower and fruit numbers, which are commonly used in classifiying this genus, are analyzed to find out their applicability in the tropic. This study was based on all herbarium specimens preserved in Herbarium Bogoriense, and those fresh Capsicum which are cultivated in Bogor and Cibodas Botanical Gardens as well assgmen other locations. The results of this study indicated that corolla and seed colours, flower or fruit position and pubecity are taxonomic characters which can be used in the tropics. Nowadays the genus Capsicum in Indonesia is represented by five species i.e. C. annuum L., C. frutescens L., C. violaceum H.B.K., C. chinense Jacq., and C. pubescens R.&P.
