Abstract

Hadiaty, R.K. 2007. Scientific review of Gars, Family Lepisosteidae (Lepisosteusspp. & Atractosteus spp.): threat species for native Indonesian fish . ZooIndonesia 16 (2): 87-96. Indonesia is known as one of the countries with high fishdiversity. There are a lot of unexplore area which possibly have some undescribespecies. Damaging environment, poisoning and introduce species are very dangerousfor the sustainability of the native fish species in Indonesia. Gars are the alientpredator fish which prohibited to enter Indonesian waters since 1982, but the factsthere are many breeders of this species. This review paper is to discus the description, taxonomical history and the biology of gars. The aim of this paper is to build theawareness on the dangerous and destructive of this fish for Indonesian native species

Abstract

We conducted a study of morphological variation in Whitehead’s rat (Maxomys whiteheadi) based on specimens available at the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense. A total of 224 adult specimens from the Indonesian island’s of Sumatra and Kalimantan were examined using measurements of 17 skull and four external characters. Multiple analyses of variance demonstrated that 20 of characters measured varied significantly with location. Only breadth of zygomatic plate did not show a significant effect by location. One character, hind foot length, was significantly affected by sex, and the characters head and body length, breadth of braincase, and breadth of molar 1 showed a significant interaction (p< 0,05) between sex and location. Three distinct morphological groups of M. whiteheadi were recognized within Kalimantan using discriminant function analysis. These were: a West and East Kalimantan group; a Central Kalimantan group; and a North East Kalimantan group. No distinct morphological groups were observed among the Sumatra specimens. The discriminant analysis indicated that most of the variation (79,9%) distinguished the Kalimantan and Sumatra populations from one another.

Abstract

Psittacine or parrots are colorful birdswith large heads, powerful, hookedbeaks and strong flexible feet with twotoes pointing backwards (MacKinnon1988). They are popularly kept as petanimals because of their beautifulappearance or their ability to imitatehuman and other voices. Their dailycontact with human being mayprobably transmit bird diseases suchas virus and bacteria vectored by theirparasites. A great deal diseasesagents has been learned concerningectoparasites of birds from many partsof the world, such as Southeast Asia(McClure et.al. undated) and in SouthAmerica (Perez & Atyeo 1984) andAfrica (Zump 1961).

Abstract

Kurniati, H. 2007. Survey of Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) habitat inthe Mahakam River, East Kalimantan. Zoo Indonesia 16 (2): 51-62. A survey wasundertaken to collect information on C. siamensis habitats and possible locationswhere C. siamensis occur in the lower Makaham River, East Kalimantan. Interviewswith local villagers confirmed that C. siamensis were still encountered, and thatbreeding still occurs. Specific wild habitats visited (Tanah Liat, Paya, Belibis, Amir &Mesangat Lakes) had changed greatly since 1995-1996, but weeds and sedimentationwere identified as impacting negatively on the habitats. Fishing pressure hadincreased in recent years, and young crocodiles were being caught during fishingactivities. Around 360 C. siamensis were currently in captivity at two crocodile farmsand in villages in the Mahakam River area. Hybridization with C. porosus had occurredon one of the farms.
