Abstract

The research aims to study potency of Avicennia marina leaf extract to inhibit pathogens in vitro and in vivo on post larvae of tiger prawn. The leaves we re chopped, dried and extracted with water solvents, sea water andethanol. In vitro inhibitory tests were performed using agar disc diffusion (ADD) and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) methods. The in vivo test on tiger prawn PL-8 was given by submersion, which then tested with Vibrio harveyi and Saprolegnia sp. The in vitro test showed A. marina extract can inhibit V.harveyi and Saprolegnia sp. In vivo tests of V. harveyi and Saprolegnia sp. infections, showed 60- 88% survival and 57.33-86.67%, with protective ability of the highest pathogen infection of 80.80% and 77.80%. The best A. marina extract that can inhibit microbial and protect the tiger prawn from pathogen infection is ethanol extract with concentration 1,250-1,500 ppm, followed by sea water extract 1,500 ppm and water extract 1,500 ppm respectively

Abstract

Two years old male Green Iguana (Iguana iguana) weighing 1.3 kilograms presented with a swelling mass in the abdomen. Clinical signs, palpation and radiography images indicated urolith in the urinary bladder. The mass was radiopaque and had a width of 37 mm and a length of 41 mm. Clinical findings, examination and radio-imaging confirmed urolithiasis in the urinary bladder. Coeliotomy and cystotomy were performed to remove the urolith. Two days after surgery, the iguana regained its appetite and normal urate secretion was observed. Prognosis is good when surgery is performed on a healthy animal.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of ethanol concoction (mixed extract) of three herbs plants, such as: Boesenbergia pandurata, Solanum ferox and Zingimber zerumbet against Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas sp. and both bacteria. The Plant extracts were obtained by using ethanol and the concentration of the extract was 600 mgL-1 of B. pandurata, 900 mgL-1 of S. ferox and 200 mgL-1 of Z. zerumbet. The inhibition zone was measured after 6, 12, 18, 24 h incubation at 30o C. The ratios of concoction S. ferox and B. pandurata (for 100 mL solution) were 90:10; 80:20; 70:30; 60:40; 50:50; 40:60; 30:70; 20:80; 10:90. The same ratios were made on the concoction of S. ferox and Z. zerumbet. The concoctions of S. ferox and B. pandurata in the ratio of 50:50 and 60:40, and the concoction of S. ferox and Z. Zerumbet with ratio 60:40 had higher antibacterial activity against A. hydrophila single isolate compared to the other concoctions. Furthermore, the concoction extract of S. ferox and B. pandurate 50:50 and the combined of S. ferox and Z. zerumbet ratio 50:50 and 90:10 were the best combination to inhibit the growth of a single bacterium Pseudomonas sp. The combined S. ferox and B. pandurata ratio 50:50; 10:90 and S. ferox mixed with Z. zerumbet ratio 50:50 and 40:60 were the best combination against the combined bacteria between A. hydrophila and Pseudomonas sp. The conclusion of this research was the combined extract of S. ferox and B. pandurata and S. ferox with Z. zerumbet are effective to suppress the growth of single or combination of A. hydropila and Pseudomonas sp.

Abstract

Veterinary Hospital of Education Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Bogor Agricultural University, received a Golden Retriever with clinical symptoms of anorexia, abdominal pain, vomiting and constipation in April 2016. Blood profile examination showed leukocytosis, erythropenia and low hemoglobin level. Radiographic examination without contrast showed a foreign body which is characterized by a large mass radiopaque in intestinal area. Forty-five minutes after the administration of radiographic contrast, contrast material was still in gastrium and only reached partial intestinal. Endoscopy examination showed there was irritation symptoms of the esophagus to gastrium. Black colored liquid was seen while the endoscope inserted into the gastric. Enterotomy was carried out to remove foreign objects. The foreign body is consisted of bones fragments and the plastic that was eaten by the patient. One week after surgery, the animals showed clinical symptoms and had a good appetite. These case can be prevented by not giving foods that contain animal bones and keeping animals in a dirty environment.

Abstract

Fruit bats have been reported as the natural reservoir of many emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases. Infected bats usually do not show any clinical symptoms and are infected persistently. This unique characters indicate that bats have high immune activity to combat viruses even in its physiological state. High immune activity will affect the size of lymphoid organ and produce high level of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Spleen is one of the important lymphoid organ which have a strategic function in elimination of blood borne pathogens. This study was undertaken to provide information on the normal size of spleen and to analyze malonaldehyde (MDA) and super oxide dismutase (SOD) levels of free range fruit bats (Cynopterus brachyotis). The ratio of body weight/spleen was 0.4% and there were no significance differences between the male and female bats. The spleen MDA levels which represent ROS generation was higher than those of the liver. Male bats with higher levels of MDA tend to have bigger spleen size than the female which has lower MDA levels. High levels of MDA might indicate a high immune activity inside the spleen. Despite the negative effect of ROS to genetic material, high level of ROS can be advantageous to support the bats immune system as a viral reservoir. High levels of MDA are generally accompanied by high levels of SOD which might reduce the negative impact of oxidative stress in the C. brachyotis.

Abstract

This study aim was to evaluate quality and effectiveness of anaesthesia by using gravimetric infusion anaesthesia with ketamine and propofol (ketafol) on pigs. The quality of anesthesia time, the cardiovascular and respiratory response of anaesthesia were evaluated in twelve male pigs with average body weight 35±5 kg. The pigs were divided into four treatments and each treatment consisted of three pigs as repetition. All the experimental animals were premedicated with atropine 0.03 mg/kg mixed with xylazine 2 mg/kg in one syringe injected intramuscularly. Fifteen minutes after premedicated, the pigs was induced intravenously with ketamine 6 mg/kg and propofol 2 mg/kg. Furthermore, the anesthetized state maintaned with gravimetric, each through infusion with propofol (0.1 mg/kg/minute) (PI-P) , ketamine (0.3 mg/kg/ minute) (PIK), combination propofol-ketamin (0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg/minute) (PI-PK), and inhalation with isoflurane 1-2% (PI-I). The heart rate, pulse, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2 ), capillary refill time (CRT) were observed before and after treatment of the anesthetic. Premedication combination of atropin 0.03mg/kg mixed with xylazine 2 mg/kg in one syringe and then induced with ketamine 6 mg/kg and propofol 2 mg/kg showed the average length of anesthesia for 32,33 minutes, longer compared to five other treatments with average length of induction three minutes and average recovery time 20.33 minutes. Maintenance of anesthesia with propofol infusion drops (0.1 mg/kg/minute), or propofolketamine infusion drops (0.3 and 0.1 mg/kg/minute) showed safer anesthesia, because they did not make drastic change of heart rate, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, oxygen saturation, pulse, and CRT value in the experimental pigs. The conclusion of this study is the methode of gravimetric intravenous infusion by using ketamine and propofol (ketafol) can be used to maintain anesthesia as an alternative general inhalation anaesthesia in pigs.

Abstract

This study was aimed to examine level supplemenation of corn oil (CO) as a source of protected poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and various crude protein (CP) levels in diets to ruminal iodin number and milk fatty acids of Friesian Holstein. The research done through two stages, using in vivo method and in vivo method. The corn oil protection is performed by saponification using KOH and then tranformed using CaCl2 to calcium salt. Research use two treatment factors with three replications, the first factor was supplementation of PUFA (L) with details L0 (Without protection), L1 (supplementation 75% Protected CO), and L2 (Supplementation 80% Protected CO) and the second factor is the P1 crude protein level (CP 12%) and P2 (CP 16%). The results showed that there was no interaction effect between the supplementation of protected CO with protein level to the ruminal iodin number, saturated fatty acid (SFA), unsaturated fatty acid (UFA), linoleic acid (LA), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) milk. The parameters are iodin number and milk fatty acids. Result of this research show that supplementation of protected CO increased the ruminal iodin number (P<0.01), UFA (P=), LA (P=) and milk PUFA (P=). Supplementation protected CO decrease milk SFA (P=). It can be concluded that supplementation of protected CO increases milk UFA of FH.
