Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of the Yanto Tanjung YouTube channel as a self-learning tool for TOEFL Reading. In recent years, the integration of digital platforms like YouTube into language education has gained increasing relevance, especially as students seek more flexible and engaging methods for mastering specific language skills. This research aims to investigate how learners perceive and utilize the YouTube channel as part of their independent study routines, particularly for improving their TOEFL Reading skills. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving five undergraduate students from the English Education Department at Universitas Pendidikan Muhammadiyah Sorong. Participants were selected through purposive sampling and interviewed using semi-structured questions. Prior to the interview, students were given approximately three weeks to watch and explore the Yanto Tanjung YouTube channel. Thematic analysis revealed four major themes: perceived usefulness, motivation, autonomous learning, and the perceived effectiveness and limitations of the channel. The findings show that students viewed the channel as highly beneficial in helping them understand TOEFL Reading strategies, with its structured explanations, example-based learning, and approachable teaching style. The channel also played a significant role in enhancing student motivation, fostering engagement, and encouraging note-taking and repetition. Furthermore, students reported that the flexible and on-demand nature of the content supported their autonomous learning, allowing them to review material at their own pace. Despite the overall positive perception, some limitations were noted, such as rapid delivery in certain videos, limited topic coverage, and access restrictions due to paid content. Nevertheless, the study suggests that the Yanto Tanjung YouTube channel serves not only as a supplementary tool but also as a meaningful, adaptive learning strategy in the digital era. It promotes student autonomy, deeper engagement, and can be an effective form of preparation for students planning to take the TOEFL test.

Abstract

This study presents an analysis of character development and narrative conflict in the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), directed by Chris Columbus and based on the novel by J.K. Rowling. The purpose of this study is to examine how the main characters, conflicts, and themes contribute to the development of the narrative and the delivery of moral messages in the film. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using narrative analysis to interpret scenes, dialogues, and character actions presented in the film. The findings show that the main characters Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley demonstrate significant character development throughout the story. Harry develops from an insecure and passive child into a courageous and responsible individual, while Hermione and Ron contribute to the narrative through their intelligence, loyalty, and cooperation. The study also finds that the central conflict involving Lord Voldemort’s attempt to obtain the Philosopher’s Stone functions as the primary narrative driver that shapes the progression of the plot. In addition, several key themes are identified, including friendship, courage, moral choice, and sacrifice. These themes are conveyed through character interactions, important scenes, and symbolic elements within the film. Overall, the analysis indicates that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone not only provides an engaging fantasy narrative but also communicates important moral values related to cooperation, responsibility, and ethical decision-making.

Abstract

Material adaptation is a pivotal aspect of English Language Teaching (ELT), particularly in culturally and linguistically diverse settings. This study examines the perceptions of junior high school teachers in Sorong Regency, Southwest Papua, regarding contextualized ELT material adaptation, with a focus on challenges encountered and perceived impacts on student engagement and learning. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected from five experienced ELT teachers through semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that teachers actively contextualize materials by integrating local culture, environmental themes, and student experiences to enhance relevance and motivation. Despite notable challenges such as varied proficiency levels, limited resources, and technological gaps, teachers observed improvements in comprehension, participation, and academic performance. The study underscores the importance of culturally responsive pedagogy and calls for targeted professional development and resource allocation to support ELT in underrepresented regions.
