Abstract

Auditory hallucinations were sensory perception disturbances commonly experienced by individuals with mental disorders and could interfere with social functioning and daily activities. In addition to pharmacological therapy, non-pharmacological nursing interventions were needed to help individuals control hallucination symptoms. One such intervention was progressive muscle relaxation, which aimed to reduce anxiety, stress, and physical tension so that individuals became calmer and more focused. This case study aimed to describe the implementation of progressive muscle relaxation in reducing auditory hallucination symptoms in the working area of Waipare Public Health Center. A descriptive design with a nursing process approach was applied, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The subjects consisted of two individuals who met the inclusion criteria. Progressive muscle relaxation was administered in a structured and routine manner according to standard operating procedures during the study period. Data were collected using mental health nursing care documentation and were analyzed descriptively. The results indicated a reduction in the frequency and intensity of auditory hallucinations, a decrease in anxiety levels, and an improvement in the participants’ ability to control hallucination symptoms. The participants were also able to perform the relaxation exercises independently with family assistance. Progressive muscle relaxation was recommended as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention for individuals experiencing auditory hallucinations and could be further developed in community mental health nursing services. Keywords: auditory hallucinations, progressive muscle relaxation, nursing intervention, case study
