Abstract

: This study aims to analyze the ability of students to understand mathematical concepts in the material of ranked numbers in grade VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Pasir Penyu. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with 30 students. The results showed that the average score on the indicator restated the concept was 2.77, gave examples and non-examples of 2.63, classified objects according to the nature of the concept of 2.60, and applied concepts in problem solving of 1.63. In general, students' ability to understand mathematical concepts is in the medium category, with details of 13.33% of the high category, 66.67% of the medium category, and 20% of the low category. These results show that most of the students already have an understanding of basic concepts, but still experience difficulties in applying concepts, especially in problem solving. Therefore, learning needs to emphasize a deeper understanding of concepts and the development of problem-solving skills. Keywords: understanding of mathematical concepts, ranked numbers, learners

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the learning difficulties of eighth-grade students in understanding the concept of exponents. The research employed a qualititative method with a descriptive approach and  was conducted at MTs Nurul  Falah Airmolek. The subjects consisted of eighth-grade students from five classes and a mathematics teacher as a supporting informant. Data were collected through essay test and interviews. The results showed that students experienced difficulties in understanding the basic concept of exponents, applying the properties of exponents, and solving word probems. These difficulties were caused by weak conceptual understanding and low mastery of basic multiplication operations. In addition, students  demonstrated misconceptions regarding exponent rules, such as zero exponents and operations involving multiplication and vision of exponents. The findings indicate that students” understanding of material is not evenly distributed across classes. Therefore, more concrete, gradual, and continuous practice-based learning is needed to improve students’ conceptual understanding. Keywords:  Learning Difficulties, Mathematics, Students, Conceptual Understanding, Exponents

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the misconceptions of seventh-grade students on rational numbers material based on essay test answers. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving 32 seventh-grade students of MTs Nurul Falah Airmolek as research subjects. The instrument used was an essay test consisting of four questions designed based on indicators of conceptual understanding, namely restating concepts, classifying rational and irrational numbers, representing fractions into decimals, and applying rational number operations in contextual problems. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students still experienced relatively high misconceptions in rational numbers material. The highest error percentage occurred in the indicator of applying rational number operations in contextual problems (68.75%). The most dominant type of misconception was Concept Errors (Co), with the highest percentage reaching 56.25%, indicating that most student errors were caused by a lack of conceptual understanding rather than procedural inaccuracy. These findings indicate that students’ understanding of rational numbers concepts is still not optimal. Therefore, more innovative and constructivist learning strategies emphasizing conceptual understanding, multiple mathematical representations, and contextual exercises are needed to minimize misconceptions. Keywords: Misconception; Rational numbers; Essay test; Conceptual understanding.
