Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of the behavior contract technique in group counseling services on academic procrastination among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 14 Tarakan. The method used in this study was an experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The research subjects consisted of five students who exhibited high levels of academic procrastination, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an academic procrastination scale that had undergone validity and reliability testing, with a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.935, indicating a very high level of reliability. The behavior contract–based intervention was administered to the subjects over six sessions. The results of the analysis indicated a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores. The calculated t-value of 16.830 was greater than the t-table value of 1.680, and the significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 was lower than 0.05. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis was accepted, while the null hypothesis was rejected. These empirical findings strongly support that group counseling services using the behavior contract technique have a significant effect on academic procrastination among students
