Abstract

This study aims to analyze the crisis of modern economic ethics and examine the relevance of Hindu philosophy as an ethical foundation in the economic practices of the people of Lombok. The approach used is descriptive qualitative supported by quantitative data through questionnaires, interviews, and observations. The results show that the economic practices of the people tend to be dominated by an orientation towards artha (material gain), while the value of dharma as the foundation of ethics has not been optimally internalized. Statistical analysis shows a significant negative relationship between the understanding of Hindu philosophy and the level of crisis of economic ethics, meaning that the higher the understanding of philosophical values, the lower the tendency of unethical economic practices. Qualitatively, it was found that economic activities are viewed more as pragmatic transactions than as a form of yajña or spiritual devotion. This finding indicates a gap between normative understanding and empirical practice in the economic life of the people. This study makes a new contribution by confirming that the crisis of economic ethics is rooted in the discontinuity between the ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions of Hindu philosophy. Therefore, a contextual reinterpretation of the values of dharma, artha, and yajña is needed to serve as a foundation for building an ethical, just, and sustainable economic system.
