Abstract

This study aims to analyze household life in Gṛhastha Āśrama from a Hindu philosophical perspective. Gṛhastha Āśrama as one of the stages in Catur Āśrama has a central role in supporting the sustainability of the social, spiritual, and religious life of Hindus. The main problem in this study is how the nature, values, and goals of household life within the framework of Hindu philosophy, and their relevance in the context of modern life. This study uses a qualitative approach with a library research method, through analysis of Hindu texts such as the Vedas, Upaniṣads, Manusmṛti, and Bhagavadgītā. The results of the study show that household life in Gṛhastha Āśrama is not only oriented towards fulfilling material needs (artha) and pleasure (kāma), but must also be based on dharma as a moral and spiritual principle that leads to the attainment of mokṣa. Furthermore, the household is seen as a form of yajña (sacred sacrifice) that emphasizes social responsibility, harmonious marital relations, and the character formation of future generations. In the modern context, the philosophical values of Gṛhastha Āśrama remain relevant as an ethical and spiritual foundation for navigating the dynamics of family life. Thus, this study confirms that Gṛhastha Āśrama is a phase of life that is not only worldly but also serves as a means to achieve higher life goals in Hindu philosophy.
