Abstract

This study aims to explore the potential of water hyacinth fibers as an alternative material in crochet techniques for crafting handmade products, particularly storage containers. Traditionally, water hyacinth has been utilized through weaving techniques, although its characteristics are also suitable for methods such as crocheting. This research adopts a Research Through Design approach, involving experiments in texture restoration, fiber processing, strand joining, moisture and motif effects, 3D shaping, and coloring. The results show that water hyacinth stems soaked in regular water for 10 minutes, then cut into 0.5 cm strips and crocheted while damp, produce the best-quality yarn. Despite limitations in forming sharp-edged shapes like cubes and hexagons, the crocheted structures remain sturdy and functional as storage containers. This innovation offers a more diverse processing technique for water hyacinth, enhancing its aesthetic value and contributing to eco-friendly waste reduction in aquatic areas.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuat desain Wayfinding di dalam lingkungan kampus Ubaya untuk meningkatkan akses navigasi mahasiswa dan pengunjung baru pada lingkungan Kampus Ubaya Tenggilis. Penelitian ini menggunakan Kampus Ubaya Tenggilis sebagai kasus studi utama. Metode penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitiatif dan kuantitatif yaitu wawancara, observasi, dan kuisioner. Observasi dilakukan pada lingkungan kampus untuk mendapatkan data kekurangan dari signage yang ada,. Lalu Wawancara dilakukan kepada servicescape Ubaya untuk mengetahui lebih dalam bagaimana membuat wayfinding yang sesuai dan efektif diterapkan di kampus Ubaya. Selanjutnya disebarkan kuisioner kepada mahasiswa Ubaya untuk mengetahui keresahan dan titik lokasi yang perlu diperhatikan lebih pada pemasangan wayfinding. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah desain Wayfinding Ubaya Tenggilis yang sudah sesuai dengan sistem grafis kampus Ubaya. Penelitian ini berdampak pada kemudahan proses navigasi mahasiswa dan perkembangan produk wayfinding yang ada. Kata kunci: Wayfinding, Navigasi, Desain, Kampus

Abstract

In 2022, Indonesia experienced an increase in coffee production with 794.8 thousand tons. In Surabaya itself, according to data from the Surabaya city government in 2023, there are 175 cafes in Surabaya. With the increase in cafes and coffee production, coffee grounds waste has also increased. Coffee grounds waste itself if directly disposed of in the environment will damage the environment because coffee grounds contain harmful ingredients. So that coffee grounds waste itself needs to be reprocessed and has a great opportunity because there is still little processing of coffee grounds into useful products. Product development from coffee grounds needs to show the unique characteristics of coffee grounds. To show the characteristics of coffee grounds, the method that can be done is through lighting. Through lighting the characteristics of coffee grounds in the form of powder can be seen through the light exposed to the surface of the coffee grounds material. The research method used is experimentation, namely observation for the right treatment for coffee grounds, experiments to find out the right lighting contrast, and characteristic studies for coffee grounds with light sources. The result of the research conducted is an experiment that best shows the characteristics of coffee grounds seen with the help of a light source. This research is expected to increase the usability of coffee grounds waste.
