Abstract

This study employs a mixed-methods approach to examine the pedagogical value of learner-generated YouTube videos in Arabic language instruction in Islamic senior secondary schools across Malaysia and Indonesia. The study involved 240 non-native Arabic learners, with 120 participants from each country, and investigated the impact of video production on Arabic language proficiency, learner autonomy, and digital literacy over a sixteen-week period. Quantitative data were collected through standardized pre–post proficiency tests, autonomy and digital literacy scales, while multimodal content analysis was conducted on 240 purposively selected videos from a validated corpus of 600 YouTube uploads that followed structured production cycles. The findings revealed statistically significant improvements in overall Arabic language proficiency in Malaysia (d = 0.86) and Indonesia (d = 0.76), with particularly strong gains in speaking skills in Malaysia (d = 1.04) and Indonesia (d = 0.94). Learner autonomy and digital literacy competencies also showed significant improvement. Regression analysis indicated that production frequency and participation in feedback processes significantly predicted improvements in speaking proficiency and learner autonomy. The content analysis identified cultural vlogs, language tutorials, and narrative storytelling as the dominant genres, reflecting sociocultural influences across contexts. The study proposes a data-informed model of digital content creation integrating sociocultural interaction, multiliteracies, and self-regulated learning in Arabic CALL contexts

Abstract

The mastery of Arabic phonology (Ashwāt al-‘Arabiyyah) plays a fundamental role in the accurate interpretation of classical Islamic texts, yet its contribution to the understanding of Islamic legal terminology remains underexplored in contemporary Islamic education. This study investigates the relationship between Arabic phonological competence and students' understanding of Islamic legal terminology in the contemporary era, particularly within the context of Salafi Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) that rely heavily on kitab kuning as their primary learning resource. The research aims to assess students' levels of phonological competence, measure their mastery of Islamic legal terminology, and examine the extent to which phonological competence influences legal understanding. Employing a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, the study collected quantitative data from 120 students via standardised tests measuring Arabic phonological competence and comprehension of Islamic legal terminology. The quantitative phase was followed by qualitative inquiry involving classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis to explain and contextualise the statistical findings. Quantitative data were analysed using correlation and regression analyses, and qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings demonstrate a statistically significant positive relationship between Arabic phonological competence and the understanding of Islamic legal terminology. Students with higher levels of phonological mastery exhibited greater accuracy in identifying, interpreting, and applying legal concepts embedded in classical fiqh texts. Qualitative evidence further reveals that phonological awareness facilitates semantic processing, improves retention of legal concepts, and strengthens comprehension of qawāʿid fiqhiyyah through recurring sound patterns that function as cognitive anchors. Conversely, inadequate phonological competence frequently led to pronunciation errors, lexical confusion, and misinterpretation of legal meanings. This study contributes to the growing scholarship on Arabic language pedagogy and Islamic legal education by demonstrating that phonological competence is not merely a linguistic skill but also a crucial cognitive foundation for legal literacy. The findings underscore the need to integrate systematic phonological instruction into contemporary kitab kuning learning to enhance students' legal comprehension and interpretive accuracy.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the adhan being recited before the prescribed prayer time still frequently occurs in several rural areas due to limited access to accurate prayer time information. Field observations indicate that this problem is primarily caused by the absence of a Prayer Time Display (PTD) in local mosques. This condition leads to a lack of punctuality in the performance of congregational prayers and other religious activities within the mosque environment. This community service activity aims to design and install a digital Prayer Time Display (PTD) that meets community needs while balancing cost efficiency and device durability. The processes of design, installation, and configuration were carried out in a participatory manner with mosque congregants to ensure their capacity for independent operation and maintenance. The program's effectiveness was evaluated through interviews with the muezzin and mosque congregants to assess the accuracy of adhan timing and the ease of use of the device. The results show that implementing the digital PTD reduced the deviation in adhan timing from approximately ±5–10 minutes prior to installation to ±1–2 minutes afterwards. Consequently, the adhan schedule became more accurate and consistent. Based on interview findings, the muezzin stated that the availability of prayer time notifications and configurable iqamah intervals facilitated the performance of the adhan and improved the overall organization of worship activities in the mosque. Keywords: Prayer Time Display, Mosque Digitalization, Adhan Time Accuracy, Appropriate Technology, Rural Communities Abstrak: Fenomena azan yang dikumandangkan sebelum waktunya masih kerap terjadi di beberapa wilayah pedesaan akibat keterbatasan akses terhadap informasi waktu salat yang akurat.
