Abstract

Celery has the activity as an antihypertensive. Celery extract contains apigenin which can lower blood pressure by preventing the narrowing of blood vessels. Celery extract can be formulated in capsule. One of the important components in making capsules is the filler. Filler can increase the mass of capsule and reduce the moisture of the extract in the capsule. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal filler for celery extract capsules. In this study, a physical evaluation of celery extract capsules was carried out with 4 types of fillers, such as Manihot starch, Flocel 101, Lactose, and Corn starch amount 37% for each variation. The observed evaluations was the organoleptic properties, moisture content, disintegration time, uniformity and hygroscopicity. Each evaluation was analyzed by Graphpad ANOVA Tukey Multiple comparation. The optimum physical evaluation result was the corn starch capsule filler with a flow time of 20,0 grams/sec, the water content of 7,88% and the disintegration time of 9,26 minute, the weight uniformity met the requirements also the physical appearance with no lumps before an after exposure for 24 hours. Thus corn starch can be an optimal filler in celery extract capsule preparation.
