Abstract

This study will demonstrate the calculation of the heat transmission range from a heater to the surface being heated. It will be highly beneficial for field practitioners implementing systems that necessitate heating to diminish humidity, such as heater control panels and alternator heaters. The application indicates that the thickness of a heater plate will improve heat distribution both vertically and horizontally, while the surface area will expand the heating zone; hence, either factor may serve as a criterion for selecting the heater to be used. The calculations indicate that the thickness of the heater plate is a more effective variable for selecting an electric heater than increasing its heating area. This study was conducted on an alternator control panel at the power plant owned by PT. EPFM to investigate the heat transfer characteristics inside the panel using an electric plate heater. The experimental setup employed a 250-watt disc-shaped electric heater mounted on the inner wall of the control panel as the primary heat source. A thermostat was used to regulate the temperature, while a digital thermometer was utilized to monitor the temperature distribution within the panel enclosure. Measurements of distance, material thickness, and cross-sectional dimensions were carried out using a tape measure and vernier caliper. The research procedure involved installing the heater inside the panel, supplying 220-volt electrical power, and recording temperature variations at several predetermined locations within the panel. The experiments were conducted under different heater thicknesses and cross-sectional configurations to evaluate their influence on the heat transfer performance and thermal distribution inside the control panel. The obtained data were analyzed to determine the effect of geometric and operational parameters on the thermal characteristics of the heating system.
