Abstract

Plant tissue culture is an important technology for producing uniform, high-quality, and pathogen-free planting materials. However, its integration into vocational school learning remains limited by teachers’ technical competence and the underuse of laboratory facilities. This community service program aimed to improve teachers’ understanding and practical skills in in vitro plant propagation at SMK Negeri 3 Takalar. The program involved 15 teachers and consisted of preparation, socialization, intensive training through lectures, demonstrations, guided practice, mentoring, and evaluation using pre- and post-tests. Questionnaire responses were scored on a 1–4 ordinal scale and analyzed descriptively and inferentially using the Mann–Whitney U test. The post-test group showed a significantly higher total score than the pre-test group, with the median score increasing from 33 to 43 (W = 120.00; p < 0.001). The greatest improvements were observed in understanding laboratory sterility, practical experience, and readiness to teach plant tissue culture. These findings indicate that the program strengthened teachers’ conceptual understanding and practical competence. However, sustained implementation requires continued support in laboratory facilities, consumable materials, maintenance, and technical mentoring.
