Abstract

Flexible DC transmission systems based on modular multilevel converters have the potential to support the inertia of AC power grids by using sub-module capacitor energy storage. However, existing studies generally believe that the inertia provided by flexible DC systems is limited by their energy storage time constants, which is weaker than that of synchronous motors, and lacks quantitative indicators to measure their support strength. Introducing the flexible-DC equivalent inertia constant (FDEIC) as a precise metric for assessing inertia support under different management schemes, this research presents a new analytical framework based on frequency responses. Results show that the inertial response is influenced by control bandwidth, DC-voltage dynamics, and circulating-current behaviour. A more generalized multi-terminal FDEIC is created to account for the impact of raised total capacitor energy, and the theory is further expanded to cover DC grids with more than one terminal. A three-terminal flexible DC grid simulation model is built in the PSCAD environment, and the simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed quantitative analysis method.

Abstract

This paper presents an advanced MPC-based energy scheduling framework for islanded microgrids operating under uncertain and dynamic conditions where photovoltaic (PV) generation and energy storage systems (ESS) are integrated, and load management is hierarchically prioritized. The framework employs a hybrid ARIMA and random forest forecasting model to improve day-ahead and intra-day predictions of PV generation and load demand, enabling intelligent demand response, prioritized load shedding, and adaptive storage operation. Moreover, the proposed framework incorporates time-of-use (TOU) pricing and load importance weighting to minimize operational costs while ensuring a reliable power supply for critical loads. Simulation results across four operational scenarios demonstrate that the proposed method achieves approximately 32% improvement in critical load protection, 30% reduction in total operating cost, and 33.3% decrease in total load shedding compared to conventional MPC-based approaches. The proposed approach, therefore, provides a comprehensive, dynamic, and cost-efficient solution for microgrid scheduling and can be extended to multi-microgrid cluster applications in future research.

Abstract

Hybrid energy storage system (HESS) configurations have the potential to mitigate the detrimental effects of photovoltaic power generation oscillations on DC microgrid safety and reliability. The economic efficiency of HESS can be improved through the utilization of batteries and their complementary attributes through an energy management strategy. This will allow for the full utilization of the benefits of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), such as high efficiency, lossless energy storage, elevated power density, and rapid response. The battery-SMES HESS is subject to a life cycle cost (LCC) model, along with its associated constraints. System expenditures can be drastically cut by optimizing the HESS capacity layout. The goal function is the lowest LCC, presuming that the power demands of the system are met. Particle swarm optimization takes acceleration into account when designing the capacity of the system. In order to prove that the suggested method of configuring capacity works, a microgrid model is created and tested using numerical data.
