Abstract

Introduction: Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease of the knee joint characterized by pain, muscle weakness, and limitations in functional activities. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and exercise therapy in reducing pain and improving muscle strength. The method used was a case study involving a 60-year-old female patient diagnosed with bilateral knee osteoarthritis. The intervention was administered over 8 therapy sessions consisting of TENS and exercise therapy, including free active movement, active resisted exercise, and quadriceps setting exercises. Measurements were conducted using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain assessment and Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) for muscle strength evaluation. Results: showed a reduction in pain from 6.1 cm to 4.8 cm in the left knee and from 5.3 cm to 4.1 cm in the right knee. In addition, muscle strength increased from grade 4 to 4+ in both flexor and extensor muscles. Conclusion: of this study is that the combination of TENS and exercise therapy is effective in reducing pain and improving muscle strength in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
