Abstract

This article departs from an academic crisis characterized by a disjunction between normative-ritualistic Islamic theology and a social reality marked by inequality, conflict, and pragmatism. Although theology possesses transformative potential, contemporary religious practices tend to remain individualistic and lack the capacity to effectively respond to social, political, and economic challenges. The research gap lies in the limited integration of theology, Sufism—particularly tazkiyatun nafs—and social praxis within a systematic and emancipatory framework. This study employs a theoretical approach of transformative tazkiyatun nafs grounded in emancipatory tawhid, positioning self-purification as the foundation of social change. The research method is qualitative-conceptual, utilizing library research with philosophical, theological, and hermeneutical analysis. The main argument asserts that the reconstruction of Islamic theology must shift from ritualistic tawhid toward emancipatory tawhid that integrates spiritual, ethical, and practical dimensions. The findings indicate that tazkiyatun nafs can be transformed from an individual practice into a social paradigm that shapes collective consciousness toward justice. The scholarly contribution of this study lies in the formulation of an integrative model of theology–Sufism–social transformation as a new paradigm in contemporary Islamic studies.

Abstract

Poverty remains a multidimensional problem that persists amid global economic development and social modernization. Conventional development approaches oriented toward economic growth have proven insufficient to address the structural and cultural roots of poverty. In this context, poverty studies within Islamic scholarship are still predominantly dominated by normative and economic perspectives, while the spiritual-transformative dimension based on theology and Sufism has not been conceptually developed as a paradigm for social change. This research gap indicates the need for a theoretical reconstruction that integrates Islamic spirituality with social transformation toward a poverty free society. This article employs the theoretical approach of Transformative Tazkiyatun Nafs based on Emancipatory Tauhid, which positions self-purification as the foundation for social change and liberation from poverty structures. The study uses a qualitative conceptual method through library research, applying critical-constructive analysis of Islamic theological literature, social Sufism, and theories of social change. The main argument of this article asserts that poverty is not merely an economic issue, but also a spiritual, moral, and structural crisis. Therefore, transformation toward a poverty-free society must begin with the transformation of tauhid consciousness, which fosters social solidarity, distributive justice, and community-based economic empowerment. The transformative tazkiyatun nafs approach offers an integrative model that links individual transformation with social transformation as a strategy for creating a poverty free society. The scientific contribution of this study lies in developing a new paradigm of emancipatory tauhid, integrating Sufism with social change theory, and constructing a conceptual framework for a poverty-free society based on transformative theology, thereby enriching contemporary Islamic Studies

Abstract

Contemporary Islamic theological studies are currently facing an academic crisis characterized by definitional stagnation, the loss of transformative urgency, and unproductive historical readings. The root of this problem lies in the dominance of doctrinal–normative approaches that tend to neglect the existential dimensions of modern human life, causing theology to lose its relevance in addressing issues of meaning, suffering, and alienation. The research gap emerges from the limited integration between Islamic theology and existential psychology, particularly in responding to the phenomenon of the existential vacuum. This study employs Viktor Frankl’s humanistic–existential framework, which emphasizes the concept of the will to meaning as the foundation of human meaningfulness. This research adopts a qualitative method with a philosophical-critical approach and hermeneutical analysis of classical and contemporary theological literature. The main argument of this article asserts that the crisis of Islamic theology is not merely a methodological crisis, but fundamentally an existential crisis resulting from the disconnection between doctrine and human experience. Therefore, a reconstruction of Islamic theology based on meaning-centered theology is required—one that is existential, interdisciplinary, and transformative in nature. The scholarly contribution of this study lies in the formulation of a new paradigm that integrates Islamic theology with existential logotherapy, thereby shifting the orientation of theology from merely producing truth-claims toward facilitating meaning-making. This approach is expected to revitalize the role of theology as a discipline that is not only normative, but also relevant in fostering existential awareness and humanistic consciousness.
