Abstract

Ancient Greek civilization is one of the most important milestones in human history, laying the primary foundations for the development of Western science, philosophy, art, politics, and culture. This article aims to comprehensively examine the historical journey of Ancient Greece from the early Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations, through the development of the polis in the Archaic period, to the peak of its intellectual glory in the Classical period. The method used in writing this article is a literature study with a historical-descriptive approach, through the analysis of historical sources, scientific works, and relevant academic literature. The results of the study indicate that Ancient Greek civilization developed gradually through the interaction of geographical conditions, socio-political dynamics, and the development of rational thought that replaced mythological explanations. The legacy of Ancient Greece is visible not only in the form of physical remains such as buildings and works of art, but also in abstract concepts such as democracy, philosophy, and science, which remain influential to this day. This article concludes that Ancient Greece provided an important foundation for the formation of modern civilization, particularly in the context of rational thought and human values.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the influence of Ibn 'Arabi's philosophical Sufism in the thought of Hamzah Fansuri and Syamsuddin al-Sumatrani and its contribution to the development of Islam in the archipelago. This research uses a literature study method with a descriptive qualitative approach, which is sourced from scientific literature in the form of national and international journals that are relevant in the study of Sufism, Islamic intellectual history, and sufistic literature. The results of the study show that Ibn 'Arabi's thought, especially the concept of wahdat al-wujud, has a strong influence on the development of Sufism in the archipelago (1). This influence can be seen in the works of Hamzah Fansuri who express spiritual experience through symbolic and metaphysical poems. Meanwhile, Syamsuddin al-Sumatrani developed and systematized the teachings through the concept of the Dignity of the Seven which was adapted to the socio-intellectual context of the Acehnese people during the Sultanate (2). These findings show that philosophical Sufism not only developed as a metaphysical doctrine, but also underwent a process of adaptation and localization in the Islamic tradition in the archipelago. The novelty of this study lies in the affirmation of the relationship between Ibn 'Arabi's thought, the intellectual transformation by Hamzah Fansuri and Syamsuddin al-Sumatrani, and its role in shaping the Islamic character of the archipelago that is inclusive, adaptive, and based on local culture. Thus, philosophical Sufism can be understood as one of the important foundations in the development of Islamic intellectual identity in the archipelago historically and sustainably.
