Abstract

Smoking behavior among adolescents remains a serious public health issue in Indonesia. Social media has become a new platform for tobacco companies to indirectly promote their products through engaging content and influential public figures, potentially increasing adolescents' interest in trying cigarettes. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between exposure to cigarette advertisements on social media and adolescent smoking behavior in Banrimanurung Village, Jeneponto Regency. A quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. The population consisted of 171 male adolescents, with 120 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a closed-ended questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS software with the Chi-Square test. The results showed a significant relationship between exposure to cigarette advertisements on social media and smoking behavior, with a p-value of <0.001 (<0.05). Exposure to cigarette advertisements on social media is therefore significantly associated with smoking behavior among adolescents in Banrimanurung Village. Increased awareness of smoking risks, stronger family and school supervision, and enhanced health promotion by community health centers are recommended. Moreover, reducing adolescent smoking through stricter digital advertising regulation not only protects individual health but also contributes to reducing environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure in public spaces, decreasing cigarette butt waste — a major source of plastic and toxic pollution — and lowering the overall environmental burden of tobacco production and disposal, aligning with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

Abstract

Smoking behavior among adolescents is a serious concern in public health efforts due to its long-term impact on health into adulthood. One of the main factors driving this behavior is peer influence, which plays a significant role in shaping habits and behavioral decisions, including smoking. At the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences, Universitas Negeri Makassar, students who are expected to serve as role models for healthy behavior are frequently observed engaging in smoking activities, even within the campus environment. This phenomenon highlights the strong social influence within peer groups, making it essential to investigate the extent to which peer influence affects smoking behavior among students as an initial step in formulating effective interventions to create a smoke-free campus environment. The objective of this study was to analyze the role of peer influence on smoking behavior among students at the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences, Universitas Negeri Makassar. This research employed a quantitative observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study utilized a simple random sampling technique, given the homogeneous nature of the population, with a total sample size of 281 participants. The results indicated a significant relationship between peer influence and smoking behavior among FIKK UNM students. The analysis revealed that students with peers who smoke were more likely to smoke themselves. Future researchers are advised to explore other factors, such as the duration of smoking habits in relation to the length of friendships among adolescent smokers.

Abstract

E-cigarette use is a growing trend among students and has attracted attention due to its health impacts. This behavior is influenced not only by individual factors but also by social factors, particularly peer groups, including social interactions, peer habits, and group solidarity. This study aimed to determine the relationship between social interactions, peer habits, and group solidarity with e-cigarette use among students at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, Universitas Negeri Makassar (FIKK UNM). A quantitative study with an observational-analytical design and a cross-sectional approach was employed. A total of 330 respondents were obtained using the Slovin formula. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the chi-square test in SPSS. The results showed that 199 respondents (60.3%) did not use e-cigarettes, while 131 (39.7%) did. Bivariate analysis revealed a significant relationship between social interaction and e-cigarette use (p = 0.001), peer habits and e-cigarette use (p = 0.001), and group solidarity and e-cigarette use (p = 0.001). Peers play a significant role in e-cigarette use among students through social interaction, imitation of peers' habits, and the drive to maintain group solidarity. Prevention efforts should therefore target not only individuals but also the broader student social environment. These findings are relevant to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), as addressing e-cigarette use among young people is essential to ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages.
